It’s often said that all brides are beautiful in their own way. Style blogger Callie Thorpe, however, had to go through a lot to believe that about herself.
Proudly and loudly plus size (or, as she prefers, curvy), Thorpe has made a career out of challenging norms about what looks good (or great!) on her blog From the Corners of The Curve, her work for glossy publications, and her heavily followed Instagram account. But her rise as a style blogger has done more than just help her career or give people with bodies like hers a sense of pride and belonging—it’s helped Thorpe accept herself as well.
Along with photos of her amazing nuptials earlier this month, Thorpe took to her popular Instagram account to explain why zipping up in her gorgeous wedding dress was more than just a big moment for her as a bride—it was a highpoint in her journey towards total self-acceptance. “I never dreamed I would wear a dress like this,” she said. “I used to think that I would never get married until I was thin. There were even times I doubted myself thinking I would be too self conscious to wear it. But As you grow older and you surround yourself with the right people, you begin to realise that what you look like doesn’t really matter to those that love you.” Wow.
She continued, offering advice for everyone looking forward to their wedding day (and even those who aren’t). “I would like to say this one thing to brides to be everywhere, plus size or not. Do not feel you have to change yourself or your size to be happy on your wedding day, your partner loves you for who you are, not just what you look like.” And here comes the really good part. “You are deserving of happiness no matter what your size, and you will still be the most beautiful person in the room next to your love because you will be glowing with the love you have for each other. The happy ending is for everyone so please, please let yourself have it.”
Thanks, Callie. We toast your happy ending and will remember to let ourselves have ours.
