From Amy Adams to Ellen DeGeneres, some of the biggest names in Hollywood rely on CoverGirl makeup artist Molly Stern for their red-carpet looks. Below, Molly dishes on everything from her first celebrity client to the 10 beauty tools she can't live without.
Long before the current crop of celebrity makeup artists, you were working with some of the industry's top talent. Who was your first star client?
Well, my first "moment" was the cover of Esquire magazine with Jim Carrey. He put clothespins all over his face ... I guess I've come a long way when it comes to beauty!
Is there really such a thing as "universally flattering" makeup? If so, what are your favorite fail-proof products/shades?
I am in love with cream blush and I think it’s one of those products that looks great on everyone and helps every woman look healthier and more alive! CoverGirl and Olay Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush is my go-to for a pop of natural color on my cheeks — the cream blush comes in four gorgeous shades that look good on all skin tones.
What is your all-time favorite red-carpet look you've created for a client?
There are so many red-carpet looks that I adore, so it’s difficult to choose just one, but I have always loved a modern smoky eye; using more taupes and browns versus the classic black and silver. I feel a slightly "dirty" eye on the red carpet can help accentuate a woman's natural beauty and not compete with the dress. Mixing glamour and reality. It's a fun combination.
What products do you think a woman should splurge on? When should she save her money?
I think it’s important to invest in a good moisturizer with SPF — this is a product you should apply daily, and the health of your skin ultimately affects your overall complete beauty look. I think women can save their money when it comes to investing in eyeshadow, mascara and lipgloss. All women love playing with color, and the drugstore aisle is the perfect place to go to experiment with bold shades without breaking the bank.
Which spring/summer 2010 beauty trends are you most excited about?
For summer, I am loving a bright coral lip as well as a colorful smoky eye. CoverGirl Smoky ShadowBlast makes it virtually effortless to create a bright smoky eye in just two steps. Plus the shade palette was designed by my makeup hero, Pat McGrath, so you know the look is amazingly on-trend.
