Memorial Day Make-Up Tips from a Pro

Jemma Kidd's easy-yet-effective transitional beauty tricks:

1. Use radiance cream under foundation. This is more subtle than when you dab it on top as a highlighter.

2. Don’t try to cover very pale skin with a darker foundation — match to your natural skin tone and add color with blush. Peach tones give a sunkissed radiance to the skin.

3. Use a tint or cream blush in a natural fresh pink, so that your cheeks look as though you’ve pinched them — use very little product to start with and build up the color gradually.

Amanda Peet's Tips for a Brighter Smile

Posted by babu 1:58pm GMT

"Bent" star Amanda Peet shares her secrets for achieving & maintaining a red-carpet-worthy smile:

Smile Bright
A bright, white smile is a necessity in my line of work, so I make sure to keep mine in tip top shape by using the Crest 3D White 2 Hour Express Whitestrips, which are fast, effective and easy!

Seeing Red
On set, when it is important to call attention to my mouth, the makeup artist will often choose a red or dark lip color with a blue undertone, allowing my teeth to look even whiter.

Picture-Perfect
A little lip gloss goes a long way! I make it a point to sneak some on before photos on the red carpet to make sure I look polished in every shot.

Enhance Your Best Assets
Pick a feature and stick with it. If you go with a bold lip color to enhance your smile, then tone down your eye makeup. If you go with the eyes, then go nude with your lips. No matter which you choose, a brilliant white smile goes with both!

Tricks of the Trade
A makeup artist once shared this tip with me: when attempting to keep your smile white, try drinking soda or coffee with a straw to avoid direct contact with the teeth.

Expert Advice: Valentine's Day Waxing

Posted by babu 12:03pm GMT

Contrary to popular belief, waxing can actually be a pleasant experience — when you know what you're doing, that is. To ensure a smooth, bump-free Valentine's Day, we've asked NYC's celeb-adored Strip Ministry of Wax to share their top tips & tricks:

Scheduling Your Appointment

Waxing should be done at least one or two days in advance of a special occassion, like Valentine’s Day, especially if you are new to waxing as people with very sensitive skin might incur slight redness and blotchiness. It will calm down in a day or so.

Should that happens, apply a moisturizing product for instant calming and healing (we use Strip's Ice Cream, $34). For bumps and itching, we also recommend our X’ed Out Cream ($34), an alcohol-free, anti-inflammatory treatment.

Preparing for the Service

To ensure topmost comfort, we suggest the following:
• Do not shave or pluck their hair prior to your wax appointment as hair strands that are too short might not be removed efficiently. Optimum length for waxing is around 4-6mm. Our Waxperts will trim the hair if it is too long.
• Do not wax during your period. Not only it is unhygienic, the pain level will also be heightened. Do leave one week before and after your period before waxing.
• Avoid waxing for a couple of hours after consumption of alcohol, as contrary to popular beliefs, stimulants can cause the skin to be extra sensitive.
• Avoid sun bed or tanning 2 – 3 days prior to waxing as it makes the skin more sensitive and can cause dry, flaky skin which will be unsuitable for waxing. Keep skin moisturized for a more effective and pain-less wax.
• You can always opt to take an aspirin or ibuprofen about 30 - 45 minutes before waxing to help reduce discomfort, especially if you are waxing sensitive areas such as the bikini, Brazilian or chest.

Post-Service Care

For the next 24 hours after one’s wax, we recommend:
• No hot baths; No swimming or sunbathing; heat or UV treatments like sunbeds or saunas
• No tight clothing
• No perfumed products including deodorant, anti-perspirant, self tanner or make up

• No touching, scrubbing or rubbing the area; No intensive exercise
• Do exfoliate every 4 – 7 days after the wax appointment. Start the exfoliation 3 days after your waxing session. Use a fine grain scrub, such as Malin + Goetz Peppermint Body Scrub ($30).
• Do contact your esthetician if anything looks off. At STRIP, we offer a dedicated SOS email address for customers (info@strip-usa.com).

When/If Things Go Wrong

Bad wax may causes minor burns, skin discomfort, discoloration and ingrown hair. At-home treatments, like those mentioned above, are great to have on hand to help calm and moisturize irritated skin. Tea Tree Oil also helps to treat and prevent ingrown hair problems, and chilled chamomile tea is also a great way to soothe redness. Alternatively, you can also pop into a spa that offers post-wax extractions, or " bikini facials."

Sally Hershberger’s Quick Fixes for Unruly Winter Hair

Posted by babu 2:04pm GMT

Splash News

Celebrity stylist Sally Hershberger shares her top tips and tricks for winter-worn tresses:

Concern #1: Flyaways

• To fight flyaways caused by dry winter weather, rub unscented dryer sheets on your head to neutralize the hair and calm flyaways (*must use unscented)
• Apply a finishing spray, such as my Star Shine, on dry hair for a smooth finish while adding shine.

Concern #2: Volume

• Apply a volumizing hairspray, such as my Body Fix, to add lift and fullness to the hair. The unique formula allows you to control the fullness of a style with your fingertips. The more you work the product into the hair, the bigger the style.
• When blow-drying hair, use a big round brush and start drying from the nape of the neck, working your way up to really build the style.

Concern #3: Damage

• Apply a moisturizing styling aid to lock in moisture and protect hair from thermal styling.
• Apply a keratin-based, spray-on product to dry or damp hair, and comb through from root to tip to seal split ends and lock in moisture.
• Squeeze a small amount of a cream-based aid, like my Soft Touch Shaping Cream, into palms and lightly run hands through dry hair for immediately smooth and frizz-free strands.
