Expert Advice: Thinning Hair

Posted by babu 5:40pm GMT

Splash News

Do you have fine, thinning tresses? Create the illusion of a fuller mane with these top tips,
courtesy of superstylist Garren:

—Keep your hair shoulder-length or shorter, and with a blunt cut.

—Side-part your hair for more coverage over the crown.

—Coloring your hair can actually make it appear fuller because it makes the cuticle swell. (Ask your colorist for the gentlest formula possible—single-process dye without ammonia is best.) But don't go too dark—the contrast with your white scalp will make thinning areas more obvious.

Today's NY Times features a lengthy story on the events leading up to Sarah Palin's recent resignation, including the impact they've had on the Governor's health:

"Friends worried that she appeared anxious and underweight. Her hair had thinned to the point where she needed emergency help from her hairdresser and close friend, Jessica Steele. 'Honestly, I think all of it just broke her heart,' Ms. Steele said in an interview at her beauty parlor in Wasilla, the Beehive."

Okay, so this "miracle" pill won't help fight the urge to pull other people's hair. But it can help if you're addicted to plucking your own.

BBC News is reporting that a simple supplement containing N-acetylcysteine (an amino acid) can aid those suffering from Trichotillomania by dramatically reducing the urges associated with the disorder.

Answer Me This: Hair Loss

Posted by babu 4:57pm GMT

emreogan/iStockphoto

Q: What can you recommend for thinning hair, and losing it too? I'm 84 yrs of age and so embarrassed. I don't want to wear a wig. Please help!
— P. Falsone.

A: Thank you for writing in! I've enlisted the help of Philip Kingsley, renowned trichologist, to best answer your query:

There are numerous causes of thinning hair. For example: low iron levels, thyroid anomalies, low vitamin B12 or zinc, poor eating habits, lack of protein intake (hair is protein) and— of course— as with everything else in the body, age becomes a factor. Aging hair is finer hair whereby the diameter of each hair becomes smaller giving less volume, but not necessarily less numbers.

Apart from having blood tests to help to determine the above possible causes, using a Scalp Mask, like Philip Kingsley Scalp Mask, once a week (massaging it into the scalp for at least 5 minutes) would help, as well as frequent shampooing. Also, the most important meal for hair protein is breakfast, and the second most important is lunch.

Stem Cell Research Now Regrowing Hair

Posted by babu 2:37pm GMT

According to recent reports, the study of stem cells may hold aesthetic value, too.

John Satino, the clinical director of the Hair & Scalp Laser Clinic in Florida, is now testing a method of using stem cell therapy and treatment to stimulate hair growth in people who are suffering from premature baldness.

Of course, there are existing ways to treat hair loss that are much more accessible (topical treatments like Rogaine, cortisone/steroid injections...), but the information obtained from these studies could revolutionize the hair care industry as we know it.

Click here to learn more about procedure, and here for additional information on Satino's study.
