Answer Me This: At-Home Hair Color Gone Wrong

Posted by babu 1:43pm GMT

Q: I'm a brunette and recently colored my hair using a cool, medium brown (28-day). The color oversaturated and now my hair is almost black. Is there any way to fade the color faster (without causing major damage)? Thanks! — Clare F., Washington, D.C.

A: Sorry to hear, Clare! I've asked celebrity colorist Rita Hazan for her expert advice:
"Definitely! Use a clarifying shampoo. Or if you don’t have one on hand, you can use dish soap, such as Palmolive. Wash a few times over and over for a few days to a week, and it should help strip some color out. But be sure to use a very hydrating conditioner — you don't want to dry out your hair!"

Lackluster Locks?

Achieve high shine in no time with these tried and true tricks of the trade:

Lather Less
Skip shampoos, and just rinse and condition instead. This will help regulate your scalp's oil production, and prevent follicle dehydration.

Think Ahead
Weekly pre/post cleansing treatments aren't just for when your hair looks or feels dry. To maintain a lustrous, healthy-looking finish, make sure to nourish your tresses on a regular basis. Experiment with different formulations and frequencies to find what works best for you (for example: a lightweight, shine-enhancing masque 3x/month; overnight treatment oil 1x/month.)

Guard Against Damage
Thermal protectants — like John Frieda's celeb-adored Full Repair Perfect Ends — are a great way to shield against damage caused by heat styling. A few drops of SPF mixed into your daily conditioner can help keep your color looking rich and vibrant, as well.

Laminate Your Locks
Not all shine products are created equal. To ensure your hair looks luminous and not weighted down or oily, opt for spray formulas with a fine mist, which work on both wet and dry hair (Serge Normant Meta Sheer Dry Oil Finishing Spray is a favorite).

Oil Dip
If you've not yet discovered the benefits of hair oils, like Rodine by Recine, you've been missing out! Whatever your texture, a touch of oil at the ends smooths, defines and adds ample shine.
