Get the Look: Heidi Klum's (Many) Emmy Styles

Posted by babu 12:46pm GMT

I adore each and every hairstyle that Heidi Klum modeled at the Primetime Emmys, so I’ve asked Helena Faccenda (the celebrity stylist behind it all) to share her inspiration and walk us through what it takes achieve these glamorous hairstyles.

Experiment with
each of these looks for a different occasion, or use Helena's tips and
techniques to create a single style that can take you from day to
night:

Look One: Heidi on the Red Carpet
“I really felt like the dress was very late ’60s-early ’70s inspired,” says Helena. “I wanted to give Heidi a Bridgette Bardot–inspired ponytail with an elegant edge.”

How Helena Achieved This Look:
Little to no product is needed to create this look, other than a few drops of serum to help reduce frizz. First, Helena blew Heidi’s hair out with a blow-dryer. Once dry, she used a wide (1.5-inch) barrel iron to curl her hair. Then, once the curls were set, Helena blew about 60 to 70 percent of the curl out of Heidi’s hair to create a soft wave. She then pulled Heidi’s hair back into a low, loose ponytail. Taking hair underneath the nape of Heidi’s neck, Helena pulled the pieces so the top crown of her head had volume. Finally, she wrapped a small section of hair around the elastic, pinning the top of the ponytail and the hair covering the elastic to Heidi’s head, securing the bump and creating an elegant, easy-to-do look.

Look Two: The Tuxedo
“I wanted the hair to look clean and elegant, like a hair commercial. The hair was very inspired by Veronica Lake."

How Helena Achieved This Look:
When Heidi came in from the red carpet, Helena brushed out the low ponytail and put it into an extremely loose, simple ponytail. She wanted it really loose so Heidi could pull the elastic easily with one finger and transition from the tuxedo look to the glamorous sequin romper she was wearing underneath.

Look Three: The Dior Buttercream Dress

“We went back to the Bardot ponytail, because the structure and beauty of the top of the dress required little to no hair framing the face,” advises Helena.

Look Four: The Black & White Dress
“This dress was very modern, so I wanted something very clean, structured and elegant.”

How Helena Achieved This Look:
Since there was little time between outfit changes, Helena decided to create a tight bun by taking Heidi’s ponytail from the previous look, wrapping it around her hair elastic and pinning tightly to Heidi’s head. “It only took two minutes!” exclaimed Helena.

Look Five: The Leopard Chiffon Gown

How Helena Achieved This Look:
Unpinning Heidi’s sleek bun, Helena vigorously brushed Heidi’s hair in an upward direction to bring more volume to the wave of her hair. Taking two sections above Heidi’s ears, Helena rolled the sections of hair from front to back of her head. The two sections were then secured with tiny clear elastics at the back of her head, and the look was completed with a bit of Victoria’s Secret Shine Spray.

Look Six (Final Change): Michael Kors Blue Dress

How Helena Achieved This Look:
First, Helena took out the two sections of hair she rolled back. She then went over Heidi’s hair with a blow-dryer and round brush, smoothing the hair into a Veronica Lake–inspired look. Creating a side part, Helena pulled the front bang loosely behind the ear, pinning it to secure the look. For a more modernized feel, Helena suggests making the side bang lie flat against your head.

... And voila, that’s it!

Spring '09 Runway Recap

Fashion Week flew through NYC last week, leaving us with loads of beautiful spring styles to lust after. From niche brands such as Tuleh and Derek Lam to established houses like Vera Wang, we were offered modern (and easy-to-emulate) interpretations of the classics.

Usually, we'd have to wait a whole season before experimenting with these fun, new looks, but it seems that fall's sleek styles, playful updos, and dramatic side-parts will be taking us through to warmer weather. So if you've been hesitant to upgrade your styling tools in fear of an au natural trend, think again. This coming year is all about frizz-free, glossy locks (tied-up, pinned back, worn down, cut short, or sculpted into cascading waves), so be sure to stock-up on thermal protectors and invest in an ionic iron to protect your hair.

Meg Ryan: Which Look Works?

Posted by babu 6:23pm GMT

Source: Splash News

Aside from numerous looks of shock and surprise, Meg Ryan displays an array of hairstyles in her new movie, "The Women."

Playing an accomplished, high-society New Yorker, Meg gets to flaunt perfectly coiffed locks for the majority of the film, (almost) distracting you from the years of plastic surgery she's had since her signature shag days. And though I adored her cropped cut, I don't mind these two classic looks on Ms. Ryan — I think she pulls both off quite well.

My only wish would be to see her sporting something in between voluminous curls and board-straight hair, like a tousled wave ... It just seems so fitting for her personality.

Which look from "The Women" do you think suits Meg more, straight or curly?

Answer Me This: What Are Sedu Hairstyles?

Posted by babu 3:26pm GMT

Q: What are Sedu hairstyles exactly? I hear about them all the time and have no clue what they are ... –Rhomella L., New York

A: Not a worry! I've had many people ask me what "Sedu" is, and it's actually a brand of flat irons and styling tools that aim to provide smooth, sleek hairstyles (much like the ones that Jennifer Aniston made popular). So "Sedu hairstyles" are simply looks created by using a Sedu brand styling product.

What makes this particular brand so special is/was their use of cutting-edge technology. Sedu flat irons were one of the first to reach their max temperature within seconds (reducing styling time), omit negative ions for protection, and use special plates that could provide frizz-free results without catching or breaking the hair.

Answer Me This: Straightening Ethnic Hair

Posted by babu 5:11pm GMT

Q: What are the best products and tools to use when straightening African American hair? I have coarse, curly hair and I don't use a relaxer.
— Ali C., Atlanta

A: Hi, Ali! As your question requires expert advice, I've enlisted the help of celebrity stylist Ted Gibson:

First you want to start off with a really good blow-drying agent, like Ted Gibson Build It, which will give hair a smooth, polished look. After blow drying, use a spray or cream that will help protect hair from the damaging heat of the flat iron. Be sure to use a flat iron that allows you to adjust the heat setting, and choose the one that is best for your hair type. The coarser the hair, the higher the setting should be. Then, take small sections and run the iron from root to tip, repeating if necessary, until your hair is straight.

Kat Von D: Love It or Hate It?

Posted by babu 10:43am GMT

Source: Splash News, Jackson Lee/Splash News

Celebrity ink artist, television personality, and now beauty brand designer, Kat Von D was recently snapped sporting a new, contrasting do in NYC.

I think the blonde makes it seems as though she’s wearing a terrible set of extensions. The lighter ends also highlight the damaged areas of her hair and age her a little as well (she’s only 26). I much prefer the softer, brunette shade she had previously; it complemented her dramatic features without overpowering them.

What do you think? Am I mad, or should Kat see a colorist asap?
