Off the Runway: Get "Knotty"

Some of the most modern, fashion-forward looks are actually the easiest to achieve— it's all in the technique.

Take the twisted chignon. It's fun, chic, and can easily take you from day to night. To get-the-look, I've asked Lawrence Martinez— senior stylist at Butterfly Studio Salon— to share his 3-step method:

Step One: Don't be afraid to be a little dirty.
Star with hair that’s not too clean. Hair should be smooth and polished. If its too clean, “dirty” hair with some pomade or hairspray.

Step Two: Pony up.
Comb hair to the top of the crown and tie in a high ponytail. When hair is secured in place, twist hair like a rope to the ends and wrap around the base of the ponytail and secure with a bobby pin.

Step Three: Work it out.
Pull the bun loosely until you achieve your desired shape.

...Voilà! Runway-worthy hair in a matter of minutes.

Will you be getting "knotty" this season?

Tom Hanks' Tribute Gala: Which Look Works Best?

Posted by babu 2:58pm GMT

Janet Mayer/Splash News

Hollywood's A-List was out in full force on Monday night to celebrate the cinematic achievements of Tom Hanks at a gala held in his honor. And from chic chignons to voluminous waves, the red carpet was full of inspiring looks for spring.

My personal favorites include: Charlize Theron's sleek updo, Julia Roberts' dramatic side-part and tousled curls, Rita Wilson's teased bun, and Sally Field's luminous layers. Each look is effortless (or seemingly so!), relevant, and age-appropriate.

But whose look reigns supreme? That's for you to decide.

Which look works best?

US Weekly's "Hot Hollywood" Party: Which Look Works Best?

Us Weekly hosted their annual "Hot Hollywood" party last night, and— though the turnout wasn't very exciting— the hairstyles showcased were (surprisingly) inspired.

My favorite looks of the night would have to include Garcelle Bouvais' romantic updo, Lauren Conrad's side-swept braid, Martina McBride's voluminous coiff, and Paris Hilton's half-updo.

Which look works best?

Off the Runway: Acqua Girl

From Giorgio Armani to Louis Vuitton and Ralph Lauren, slicked-back tresses dominated the runway for Spring '09. And, given the ease and practicality of a "wet" updo, it's a look that's sure to be seen on the street (red carpet, and at a social event near you) this season, too.

The key to this look is in the product used to style. For slicked-back strands that don't flake or fall apart, be sure to use a strong-hold formulation and brush through a small amount of gel (again) once your hair is dry. This will give your locks that sexy, lacquered look.

If you have....

Short hair, try AG hardjel.
A shine-enhancing, strong-hold styling gel that shapes and defines.

Medium to long locks, use Bumble & bumble gellac.
A personal favorite, this gel literally freezes your hairstyle until the next rinse.

Wavy, tousled tresses, try Avon Advance Techniques Shaping Gel.
Frizz-fighting with a firm hold, this product provides a shiny, smooth finish.

Course, curly hair, use MIZANI Silk Finishing Gel.
A wax-free pomade that works to control, define and moisturize your locks.

Teri Hatcher's Voluminous Updo: Love It or Hate It?

Posted by babu 4:01pm GMT

Seen here at the 8th annual Comedy for a Cure benefit in LA, Teri Hatcher compliments her neutral, asymmetrical dress with a voluminous updo.

I generally adore a polished ponytail, but this Conan-inspired look is a little stiff for my taste and makes the "Desperate Housewives" star seem like she's just stepped out of a beauty pageant.

What do you think of Teri's latest look?
