Get the Look: Gwen Stefani's Signature Curls

Posted by babu 2:54pm GMT

Celebrity stylist Philip Pelusi shares his step-by-step guide to achieving retro-inspired curls, like Gwen's:

Start with clean, dry hair. Hair should have a low side part (either side is fine), and be smooth and dry. So air-dry only if the hair is a smooth texture. If the hair is wavy, then blow-dry smooth. Use P2 by Philip Pelusi RepairHair to smooth, strengthen and shine hair to protect it from heat and prepare it for further styling.

Next, a hot-roller set. Work 1 section at a time. Take sections the same width and length of each hot roller. Mist on P2 by Philip Pelusi RefresHair. Look for one that is resin-free, dries crystal-clear and is water-soluble. Lightly mist the entire strand, concentrating on the ends for extra protection and smoothing of sometimes rougher ends, then roll hot roller and then clip at the roots to hold. Once entire head is rolled, then lightly mist the entire head and in between each roller at the root for extra lift once the rollers are removed.

Allow the roller set to stay in until completely cooled. Do not take the rollers out any sooner, or the curls pattern will be weak and will not hold up during the final styling stage to create this look. Take down rollers. Next, with a soft boar-bristle paddle brush, gently brush through the curls and finger-style as you move along. Do not overbrush. Gently brush through the curls once or twice until the entire head looks wavy and large curls at the bottom of the hair. Choose a brush — like Tela Beauty Organics by Philip Pelusi Natural Brush — that has a combination of both natural boar bristles and soft resin bristles with a soft domed oval base. This type of brush creates shine while smoothing the hair. Lightly re-mist with same setting spray to help control curls if needed.

Once hair is groomed into place, do a final mist of shine spray. Choose a product that has sunscreens to protect hair and hair color, is water-soluble and creates a brilliant shine, like P2 by Philip Pelusi BrilliantHair.

A Primal Urge for Makeup?

Posted by babu 4:34pm GMT

Rocha/Splash News

According to Allure, a new study shows that our drive toward wearing makeup may actually be
due to a biological urge.

It seems women's faces have a greater color variance between the eyes, lips, and surrounding skin than men's—
a contrast typically exaggerated with cosmetics.

"Though people are not consciously aware of this, they unconsciously use contrast as a cue to tell what sex a face is," says Richard Russell, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Gettysburg College. "And since femininity and attractiveness are highly correlated, making a face more feminine also makes it more attractive."

Hollywood's brightest stars lit up NYC last night in honor of "Fashion's Night Out," a citywide celebration organized by Vogue.

Favorites include: Victoria Beckham's edgy cut, Rihanna's playful streak, Ciara's sleek style, Charlize Theron's timeless coif, Gwen Stefani's avant-garde updo, Kate Hudson's voluminous 'do, Sienna Miller's luminous locks, and Camilla Belle's loose curls.

Stars' Airport Style

Most stars' airport 'dos are rather typical (tousled curls, "messy" buns, ponytails...), but there's also that select few who like to travel in style.

Take Gwen Stefani's updo, Victoria Beckham's elegant headscarf, Megan Fox's fedora, and Carrie Underwood's voluminous half-updo. Each look is "effortless," and ensures the celeb is camera-ready at all times.

How Old Is Too Old for Certain Looks?

Posted by babu 3:29pm GMT

With stars like Madonna proving that a person's choice in fitness, fashion and lifestyle (cough, plastic surgeon) can take decades off their appearance, should certain hairstyles still be considered inappropriate after a certain age?

Take Demi Moore, for example. Her (beautifully) long locks go against the notion that such looks are only fit for those under 40. And then there's Claudia Schiffer, who has been spotted recently sporting the sort of edgy, rock 'n roll-inspired 'do once reserved for rebellious 20-somethings. And who can forget Gwen Stefani's "Today Show" appearance? That updo sparked a surprising debate about whether such styles are avant-garde or childish.

What do you think? Is it time to update (or bin!) our "rules of hair"?

Gwen Stefani's Latest Look: Love It or Hate It?

Posted by babu 5:34pm GMT

Derek Storm/Splash News

If you grew up listening to No Doubt, their performance on the "Today Show" this morning surely hit a chord. As did Gwen Stefani's punk-inspired hairstyle.

It's not a look I'd recommend for everyday wear, but I found this avant-garde updo to be a brilliant take on Gwen's pre-mogul style. It's playful, modern, and perfectly polished.

What do you think of Gwen's latest look?
