Bloggers We Love: The Daily Obsession Q&A
Reading The Daily Obsession is like hanging out with that girlfriend who is always put-together and in the know. You’re bound to pick up beauty and fashion tips that will help you become stylish, too. We recently caught up with the editor, Carolyn Hsu, to find out more.
How did you come up with the idea of starting your blog?
My friend Connie and I own the blog. We had met at an event, but we always lived in different cities and would create "IM dates" to go online shopping together. We originally used the blog back in 2006 as an outlet to share our current obsessions with each other, and it has grown from there.
What is your top obsession right now, and why?
Right now I'm really into leather clothing! I have a few leather jackets and a leather pencil skirt that I'm absolutely obsessed with. I love how unexpected leather is and how it toughens up a feminine look very urban. I really want a leather dress and have set my eyes on the one Jimmy Choo did for H&M. I'll be in line this Saturday, if only for that piece!
Which celeb is your beauty icon?
I'm a huge fan of Jennifer Aniston's natural, pretty look. She always looks so fresh and put-together without ever being overdone. I would, however, like to see her do a more dramatic evening look for award shows. I think a bold lip or dark eye would look really striking on her, but I guess she knows what works for her and sticks to it (which is always a good beauty rule).
What beauty trend are you loving right now? And hating?
Smoky eyes are really in for the holiday season, and I love a dramatic eye paired with a nude lip. It's totally the opposite of my daytime look. I also love doing up the smoky eye with variations of brown and beige instead of gray and black. It makes it a little softer and prettier while still being dramatic.
I'm finding that I'm having a hard time pulling off red lips. My lips are rather full, and I find that a true red makes it just too much.
Which beauty treatment is your cure-all?
Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Bronze. I've used it for years; it’s an immediate fix that adds the right amount of color, dimension, shimmer and radiance.
Got any great beauty-on-a-budget ideas for the holidays?
One of my favorite beauty-on-a-budget brands is Cover Girl. They have been putting out some amazing products recently! One of my all-time faves is their Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush. It is completely foolproof, as far as blush goes, and doubles as a skin treatment. Plus it gives a very natural yet glowing finish who doesn't want that?
What product or treatment is worth spending money on?
Vibradermabrasion, which should be offered at your local medical spa. This is a variation of microdermabrasion but uses a sandpaper-like paddle instead of a crystal blast. The latter can actually clog pores. I've never had another treatment give me the same baby-soft, radiant skin. Your skin is red for a day or so, but then just seems to glow from the inside. The procedure removes the top layer of dead skin and exposes the baby skin underneath. I'm absolutely obsessed and would get a treatment a month if cost weren't an issue!
