Designer Q&A: Doo-Ri Chung

Posted by kgranero 3:16pm GMT

Designer Doo-Ri Chung sat down with All the Looks Insider at the Doo.Ri for Macy’s preview to talk about her jersey-chic collaboration, the allure of trench coats and what it’s really like to dress the First Lady.

Q: What was most important to you when it came to the aesthetics of the collection?
A: As far as the designs went, I really wanted to stay true to my own design aesthetic and to offer that to the Macy’s customer. The real beauty and luxury of doing this is that I design it, but somebody else really makes it come alive and at a price point I could never achieve. That’s what’s been so exciting for me. I also got to work with their [Macy’s] fabric library, and that was the most time-consuming part, because they have millions of fabrics.

Q: Any pieces that stand out as personal favorites?
A: I have a lot. I mean, I think they did a fantastic job! And I love the trench coat and, you know, when we did fittings we would try on some of the dresses. Everything is so easy and effortless, but it makes you feel and look great. So, yes, a lot of the dresses are fantastic, but my personal favorite is the trench. I’ve always been a big fan of trench coats.

Q: One of the things your brand is really known for is jersey-style dresses. What bulk of the Doo.Ri for Macy’s collection reflects that?
A: The majority of the pieces. I mean, it’s something you can wear for evening or day, or can be worn with an outerwear piece or with boots. And even the knits kind of fall the way jersey does.

Q: You received a lot of media attention after Michelle Obama wore one of your dresses to the state dinner honoring South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and wife Kim Yoon-ok this past October. What went into that, and how did it feel seeing her in your design?
A: I definitely have to give a lot of credit to Emma, who handles our PR. She’s been wanting Mrs. Obama for a long time, as have I, and, you know, they’d been in talks for a while and it just so happened that the Korean president was coming to the state dinner and was being honored. Being that I’m a Korean designer, we felt like if there was ever going to be an opportunity, this might be it, and it ended up working out really well. We were just so excited. Plus, I’m a big fan of [Michelle Obama’s]. I think she’s such an intelligent, beautiful woman, and to be able to dress her was a dream come true.

Q: Your spring collection is characterized by a lot of neutrals with fresh twists. What was the thought process behind it?
A: I think I’ve always gone for this sort of effortless elegance, and I think a woman who doesn’t look like she’s trying is something I always gravitate toward. I’ve never really been about loud, so I love the nudes and the whites, but we did a lot of prints for that season as well and some of that violet color, which was so beautiful and was, in fact, the color Michelle Obama chose to wear. Any color that flatters a complexion is a color I always gravitate toward. I always keep in mind the woman I’m dressing, first and foremost. I mean, my job is to make [women] look beautiful.

The limited-edition, thirty-piece Doo.Ri for Macy's Impulse collection will be sold at an est. 185 Macy's stores and macys.com on Feb. 15 (pictures to come!).

Sneak Peek: The Webster at Target

Posted by kgranero 1:38pm GMT

I attended a super tight-lipped Target preview yesterday to get some insight into the retailer's latest design partnership program, for which it worked with various shop owners of specialty stores and boutiques to co-create affordable (and, most importantly, accessible) collections for its guest.

Titled The Shops at Target, the first flight (so intriguing!) of the program will feature nearly 400 exclusive products from five different U.S. specialty stores: The Candy Store, Cos Bar, Polka Dog Bakery, Privet House and (the fashion component) The Webster.

Founded in 2008 by Laure Heriard Dubreuil and Milan Vukmirovic, The Webster is a fashion boutique specializing in "a highly curated mix of men's and women's ready-to-wear, luxury accessories and photography, as well as an entertainment space" in the heart of Miami Beach, Florida.

"The Webster at Target includes apparel and accessories for women, men, kids and baby inspired by the essence and sunshine of Miami, featuring flamingo and deco prints in shades of coral, navy and green."

While I wasn't permitted to snag photos at the preview, I personally fell for the collection's flirty, mixed-print flats and wedges and breezy cover-ups.

The Shops at Target will debut at all Target stores and target.com on May 6.

Coming Soon: "Dragon Tattoo" for H&M

Posted by kgranero 4:46pm GMT

In celebration of the U.S. release of David Fincher's version of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," the film's costume designer Trish Summerville has created a women's collection with pieces inspired by "Dragon Tattoo" anti-heroine, Lisbeth Salander.

"Salander's look is very real and very lived in, with pieces that her character has worn for a long time, like her jackets that act as her armour to shield her from the world. I wanted the collection to have the essence and strength of Salander, with a fashion edge, and I'm pleased with the result!," said Summerville.

The 30-piece collection (see it here), which will focus on leather jackets and pants, torn jeans and slouchy hoodies with a "dark urban feel," will be available in over 175 H&M stores beginning Dec. 14.

Are you excited for H&M's "Dragon Tattoo" inspired collection, or do you think this is just another example of a brand's easy attempt to capitalize on the entertainment industry? (For instance, some have already responded to the news with mocks as to when the "Twilight" finale collection will be out.)

Sneak Peek: Marni for H&M

Posted by kgranero 5:14pm GMT

Don't quit that part-time job just yet!

In less time than it's taken for Versace for H&M to show up on your latest credit card statement, H&M is announcing another designer collaboration, this time with Italian brand Marni.

According to H&M, the women's collection (there will also be a line for men) will consist of signature Marni silhouettes, including full pleated skirts, dresses, cropped trousers and jacquard knit, in vivid hues and bold prints (some African-inspired, some color-blocked), as well as jewelry, shoes, bags and scarves.

"I wanted to create a true Marni wardrobe by revisiting all our favorite pieces in signature fabrics and prints. As always, I love juxtaposing prints and colours, mixing modern tribal with Bauhaus graphic adding sporty utilitarian elements," said Consuelo Castiglioni, Marni Founder and Creative Director.

The collection is expected to hit an est. 260 stores worldwide beginning March 8, 2012.

Posted by kgranero 12:37pm GMT

Just days after pictures surfaced of Michelle Obama shopping at Target, Jason Wu, who caught his big break when the first lady wore his gown to the Inaugural Ball, is being announced as the next designer to collaborate on a collection for Target this winter.

Following the footsteps of Proenza Schouler, Thakoon and, most recently, Missoni (the collaboration responsible for crashing Target's website), Jason Wu's collection will include apparel, scarves and handbags (a first for Target's designer collabs) ranging from $20-$60, available at Target stores and target.com beginning February 5, 2012.

Sneak Peek: Missoni for Target

Posted by babu 4:21pm GMT

Have a penchant for the pretty and printed?

Hold onto your chevron-ribboned hats because Target just announced that it's partnering with Italian luxury label Missoni to introduce an affordable, limited-edition collection of signature prints and patterns in the form of apparel and accessories for women, men, girls and baby, along with an extensive home collection.

"Working with Target to create a mass collection that reflects the spirit of Missoni has been extremely energizing,” said Angela Missoni. “Each piece is special to me because so much thought and care went into every aspect of the design. I can’t wait to introduce the collection to Target's guests across the United States."

Offering a modern, fresh take on the late 1960s, the Missoni for Target Women's collection includes knit dresses, sweaters, swimwear, shoes, scarves and intimates, as well as beauty offerings such as cosmetic cases, brush sets and hair accessories. And as for the home collection? Expect bedding, luggage, dinnerware, stationery, bicycles and outdoor furniture in variations of stripes, zigzags and abstract floral patterns. (This will also mark the first time Missoni has created iPad and iPod covers.)

Ranging in price from $2.99 to $599.99, with most items less than $40, Missoni for Target will be available Sept. 13 through Oct. 22, 2011 at all Target stores and Target.com, with select pieces available through early December at Target.com.

Sneak Peek: Karl Lagerfeld for Macy's Capsule Collection

Posted by babu 5:40pm GMT

This week, I attended the Karl Lagerfeld for Impulse preview, where I was able to get a first-hand look at the designer's exclusive collection for Macy's, slated to arrive just in time for fall.

What I'm dubbing the perfect day-to-night collection, the Karl Lagerfeld for Impulse spectrum ranges from refined dresses and blouses to menswear, outerwear and tees with more of a rock 'n' roll edge. Complete with the designer's signature high-collared neck, the collection features a melting pot of textures (chiffon, knit, tweed and leather being among them) with pieces priced on average from $50 to $170.

"To me Macy’s is the perfect department store in the US where everybody can find what they're looking for without ruining their budget,” said Karl Lagerfeld. “That’s why I am happy to make this limited collection just for Macy's."

Mr. Lagerfeld's limited-edition capsule (see more styles here) will be sold in approximately 235 Macy’s stores nationwide and on macys.com/impulse beginning August 31.

Sneak Peek: Matthew Williamson for Macy's Capsule Collection

Posted by babu 5:44pm GMT

Just one day after the much-anticipated launch of Target's Go International Designer Collective (when my designer collaboration high was beginning to wear off), Macy's revealed Matthew Williamson as the next designer in the Macy's Capsule Collection Series.

Matthew (whose celeb fan base includes Heidi Klum, Mila Kunis and Eva Longoria) is the second acclaimed fashion designer to take part in the designer capsule collection series for the retailer’s contemporary fashion ‘Impulse’ department. Since launching in February 2011 with Kinder Aggugini, the series has been developed into a collaboration featuring celebrated designers from around the globe, each offering limited-edition women’s apparel pieces reminiscent of the designer’s signature style.

The Matthew Williamson for Impulse collection will illustrate a bohemian mood and will feature sophisticated separates and collectible '70s-inspired dresses priced on average from $50 - $120, with specialty pieces selling up to $300 (the yellow dress [above left] retails for $109, and the maxi dress [above right] retails for $119). Key items will include bold, graphic animal-inspired print and embellished day and party dresses, bohemian blouses, printed scarves and flirty day-to-evening rompers, all with Matthew’s iconic styling.

The collection will be sold in approximately 225 Macy’s stores nationwide and on macys.com beginning April 13, 2011.
