Pamella Roland Q&A: Sexy Sophistication

Posted by babu 4:22am GMT

Pamella Roland Pamella DeVos is the creative force behind the Pamella Roland line, known for its elegance, vibrant colors and lush fabrics. You've seen her dresses on Carrie Underwood, Angelina Jolie, Mariah Carey and more celebs on the red carpet.

How does it make you feel to look at such a vast collection of famous faces who’ve worn your designs over the years?

It's very exciting, and I'm flattered that so many beautiful women have worn Pamella Roland through the years. I still remember our first big placement on Kim Cattrall at the Emmys in 2004 — I was screaming when I saw her because it was not confirmed until the last second. The image of Kim in that pink gown received a great deal of international media attention, and the dress was copied the next day! I also remember when Sharon Stone and Angelina Jolie wore Pamella Roland for the first time a number of years ago. I was very excited about them as well.

If you had to choose a look that best represents the true spirit of your brand, which would it be?

I don't know if I can choose just one, but I would say that some of our looks that Carrie Underwood has worn reflect the diversity of Pamella Roland. She has worn sexy pieces like the dress she wore to the Clive Davis pre-Grammys party, but also very pretty and feminine gowns like the one at the 2008 Country Music Awards.

Have you ever been surprised by a celeb who chose to wear one of your designs?

Probably Queen Latifah — she is so beautiful and talented, and she has worn us on a number of occasions. The reason that it's somewhat surprising is that Queen Latifah is not a sample size, so she has to specifically choose to wear Pamella Roland, and then we custom make the dress or gown for her. I'm honored that she and her stylist often think of us when she has a big event.

If you could dress any celebrity who you haven’t worked with yet, who would it be?

I would say Kate Winslet and Jennifer Aniston — both are stunning, they wear clothes very well and have universal appeal.

When you’re preparing for a new season, specifically a fashion show, how do you think about other elements besides the fashion?

All of the elements tie in to my inspiration for each collection, and whether it is a fall or spring collection also plays a role. For instance, for spring shows, I tend to use more natural, airy, young looks for hair and makeup, whereas for fall shows I often like to have the hair up because of high collars, etc. We always work with Laura Mercier for our makeup and we all decide what's best for a particular collection. For jewelry, I often work with Leviev. They understand my collections, and their jewelry really compliments our clothing, especially our evening looks.

Which other designers, current or past, have had the most influence on your career?

Valentino and Karl Lagerfeld.

What do you think are the most iconic red-carpet looks?

My personal favorites are Nicole Kidman in the chartreuse Dior dress by John Galliano at the 1996 Oscars; Grace Kelly in the simple, beautiful ice-blue satin gown when she won the Oscar for "The Country Girl" in 1955; Sharon Stone at the 1999 Oscars when she wore a man’s white dress shirt and the lavender fitted skirt; and Audrey Hepburn in the Givenchy gown that she wore when she won the Oscar for "Roman Holiday" in 1954. I also thought that Barbra Streisand's Arnold Scaasi pantsuit was very fun when she won the Oscar for "Funny Girl" in 1969.

Do you have a favorite fashion era or season?

I really love 1940s fashion; Katharine Hepburn often wore white blouses and pants, which is one of my favorite looks today.
