Less than 24 hours after wrapping the 43rd annual 2009 CMAs in Nashville, Carrie Underwood’s stylist Trish Townsend (who also styles Carrie’s videos) gave us the exclusive backstage style scoop on Carrie’s incredible 10 dress changes.
What was Carrie's favorite look and why?
Carrie loved the Randi Rahm tulle and lilac flower dress [look 5]. She wore one of her dresses for the first time to the American Country Music Awards last year. Rahm’s clothes are all glamour and never boring.
How did the sequin short shorts look come together? [look6]
Oh – those shorts are Arden B! I saw them and the store thought they would be fun. The piece on top is by Roberto DeVillacis who takes old vintage fabric and works it into modern cool outfits. I found him years ago when he designed Trashy Couture and used his pieces for Carrie’s video for the film “Enchanted.” The necklace is Swarovski and the shoes are Le Styla. The CMA producers wanted to create a look like she wore in her video “Cowboy Casanova.” [watch the video here!]
How did you manage to do so many changes so fast with no hiccups?
We all work so well together; we plan it in advance and rehearse it once. We are like NASCAR backstage and Carrie is the car! Before her performance, we only had 4 minutes for her change. We had one person on each buckle of her shoes and Carrie did the jewelry.
Which look is Carrie most likely going to keep in her closet?
One she could wear again and be comfortable in. While she can’t wear these looks again because so many people saw her in them, but maybe the pink Jay Godfrey with a racing stripe down the side, if she could. She could wear it to cocktail parties –it’s the most versatile.
