One Designer, Two Ways: Contrarian New York

Posted by babu 12:11pm GMT

Katie Holmes, who has had a serious glow about her lately, kept it short and sweet in a backless Contrarian New York LBD at the "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" premiere in Los Angeles.

If you recall, Taylor Swift wore a softer version of the full-skirted cocktail dress to Brooks & Dunn's The Last Rodeo in Los Vegas in April of last year.

While both ladies pulled the dress off with ease (and grace), I tend to prefer the black shade in this case, as it really drives home the play between sexy and sophisticated.

One Designer, Two Ways: Versus

Posted by babu 1:41pm GMT

Kristen Bell proved a sheer sensation in a strapless Versus LBD cinched at the waist at the CBS, The CW And Showtime TCA Party in Beverly Hills this week.

Anna Paquin wore a square-neck (and slightly more colorful) version of the same style from the designer's fall 2011 collection (also paired with black satin platforms) at HBO's "True Blood" Season 4 Premiere in Hollywood in late June.

While I like Kristen's classy ensemble, I feel like the purple piping on Anna's style really captures the playful nature of the collection, so I'm giving this one to her.

One Designer, Two Ways: Stella McCartney

Posted by babu 1:05pm GMT

Dianna Agron pressed "fall-forward" in a sweetheart-cut, velour peplum dress with a sheer neckline and side paneling while visiting the "Late Show With David Letterman" yesterday in New York.

Just a few months ago, I featured Liv Tyler in a spotted, sleeved and shorter version of the same style (both are from the Stella McCartney Fall 2011 collection), which she wore to the launch of the Stella McCartney boutique on Saks Fifth Avenue.

While more simplistic, I tend to prefer Dianna's style in this case, as the strong contrast between the dots and the mesh on Liv's version creates the illusion of chicken pox.

One Designer, Two Ways: Oscar de la Renta

Posted by babu 11:40am GMT

Author J.K. Rowling looked gorgeous in a gardenesque Oscar de la Renta gown recently at the "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" premiere.

If you recall, Rihanna was the first to prove a budding beauty in a red and white version of the same floral gown while performing at the 2011 Brit Awards back in February.

While both ladies did a great job of choosing the perfect color scheme for their individual hair and skin types, I tend to prefer the sharp contrast of the red roses against the white backdrop as modeled by Rihanna. It just oozes romance!

One Designer, Two Ways: Versace

Posted by babu 11:36am GMT

Nothing screams "same designer collection" like a loud print, which is why I was immediately taken back to Daisy Lowe's stripy Versace crop top and pencil skirt pairing (donned at the 2011 Glamour Women of the Year Awards) when I came across this pic of Kelly Rowland wearing a similiarly colorful creation (from the same collection).

I like how the consistency of the verticle stripes on Kelly's version create a nice flow, whereas Daisy's mismatched prints compete for attention, so I'm giving this one to her.

One Designer, Two Ways: Burberry

Posted by babu 3:18pm GMT

As soon as I saw this picture of Selena Gomez in her beige, leather-trimmed Burberry dress (left) at the 2011 MuchMusic Video Awards, I was taken back to a Style Showdown featuring Li Bingbing and Reese Witherspoon wearing a peach and black version of the same style (from the Spring 2011 collection).

While I like both palettes, I love how the black leather really pops against the peach shade in the dress worn by Li and Reese. In the case of Selena's, the leather detailing gets lost in the ruffles.

One Designer, Two Ways: Givenchy

Posted by babu 2:52pm GMT

I love silk and chiffon, as well as prints, so when they're combined, I am in fashion heaven.

Mila Kunis hit it right on the mark in her partially-sheer, printed Givenchy number at Spike TV's 5th Annual 2011 "Guys Choice" Awards.

Singer Florence Welch took a more modest (and intense) approach to the Pre-Fall 2011 collection, wearing a blouse and longer, partially-sheer skirt paired with a matching blazer (she even went as far as to wear a matching purse and bootie) during Paris Fashion Week back in March.

While I can appreciate Florence's dedication to the designer collection, there's no central focus to her look (with so much of the same print, she reminds me of a screensaver), whereas Mila's styling allows her ensemble to breathe. Let this serve a classic example of "less is more."

One Designer, Two Ways: DKNY

Posted by babu 2:56pm GMT

Liv Tyler was spotted wearing a navy DKNY dress covered with mini red lips while out and about in New York. Just a few weeks prior, Tulisa Contostavlos sported a jumpsuit bearing the same pucker-print at an "X Factor" filming at the LG Arena in Birmingham.

While I love how both ladies completed their smooch-savvy styles with red heels, I tend to prefer Liv's dress to the jumpsuit, as it lends itself to a flirtier feel.

One Designer, Two Ways: Dolce & Gabbana

Posted by babu 4:15pm GMT

Stylist and fashion astrologer Annie Ladino recently wore a leopard and lace Dolce & Gabbana maxi from the Spring 2011 collection to the Toast to Annie Ladino event in New York.

If you recall, Zoe Saldana wore a full-skirted mini dress from the same collection to the 2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards back in February.

When it comes to fierce prints (and fancy details), I tend to believe less is more. I also like how the structured fit of Zoe's style served to tame her look, so I'm giving this one to her.

One Designer, Two Ways: Tibi

Posted by babu 4:15pm GMT

It looks like Blake Lively and Brooklyn Decker have the same sense of talk show style!

While Blake (see Style Steal below) popped in a bright blue Tibi dress for appearances on "The Today Show" and "Live with Regis & Kelly," Miss Decker kept it casual-chic in the same dress (from the Spring 2011 collection), only in white, and a cargo vest for a visit to "Good Morning America."

Both leading ladies looked adorable in their breezy, embroidered dresses (each coincidentally paired with a leopard accessory), so this one's a toss-up for me.
