Upgrade: Salma Hayek Brightens Up

Posted by babu 12:17pm GMT

Salma Hayek's covered up style for a hotel opening in Morocco was a little blah for one of the sexiest actresses of our time.

So, I was thrilled to see Salma brighten up on the red carpet, for a charity event in Germany, in a gorgeous festive shade of green and a strapless style that shows off her pretty perfect shape.

Which dress do you think flatters Salma Hayek better?

Trend to Try: Cheerful Magenta Dresses

Posted by babu 11:48am GMT

Got the winter blues? Then time to try out a magenta-hued dress for your next night out to pick up your spirits. I mean, how can you NOT be happy and beaming in this fun fuchsia shade?

Kerry Washington was the latest to try to the trend with her origami Marchesa dress at the Broadway opening of the play “Race” in NYC, while Marisa Tomei turned up in a very "Mad Men" 1950s vintage Jean Desses Haute Couture at the MOCA museum anniversary celebration in LA. Weeks earlier, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon both chose designs from L’Wren Scott exactly a month apart.

Trend to Try: Classic Celeb-Approved Daytime Looks

Posted by babu 6:44pm GMT

Stars dressed demurely for the recent Hollywood Reporter's Annual Women In Entertainment breakfast which was co-sponsored by our very own Lifetime network on December 4.

The look du jour included simple silhouettes in classic colors like Eva Longoria Parker's scoop neck navy Loewe dress and Halle Berry's tweed Giambattista Valli suit.

I love that each celeb, including Hilary Swank in a minimalist jersey dress, skipped the statement accessories for this prestigious event and let their classic, chic heels and great smiles take center stage.

Upgrade: Cindy Crawford Color Corrects

Posted by babu 10:14pm GMT

Was Cindy Crawford taking notes when we pointed out all the things we didn't like about her Barney-hued dress back in October? Or, perhaps she studied Olivia Palermo's way of mixing eclectic accessories before the model dressed for the recent premiere of George Clooney's new flick "Up In The Air."

Not only is her new dress color a more contemporary and flattering shade, gone are the matchy-matchy belt-and-boot combo. In their place: cool cage heels and an unexpected belt inspired by the dress' color but not a perfect match. And, 3/4 length sleeves also make even model arms look more tone.

Her new dress could easily switch from work to night for upcoming holiday parties and we found a similar style by Diane von Furstenberg for sale here.

Do you think Cindy's latest look is an upgrade?

Upgrade: Christina Ricci's Maroon Swoon

Posted by babu 3:51pm GMT

Was it the world-premiere of the highly anticipated, new Audi A8 car, that inspired Christina Ricci to really rev up her look for the red carpet?

Just last night in Miami, Ricci wore a stunning maroon dress that could have made everyone forget about the other important star there: the car.

And when she turned around to walk the red carpet, the back of the dress –and those heels!— left her last designer look (a perfectly acceptable but not as flattering striped Alexander McQueen dress), from a few weeks ago, in the dust.

Which of Christina's looks do you prefer?

Trend to Try: Understated Styles

Posted by babu 12:39am GMT

In a winter fashion season rife with statement necklaces and electric dress hues, it was refreshing to see some more understated looks on the red carpet recently.

Over the weekend, to attend a Dizzy Feet charity event, Katie Holmes tamed a rocker moto jacket with a soft shade and paired it with a simple LBD which let her Givenchy heels stand out.

Always stunning Gwyneth Paltrow accessorized a simple draped Donna Karan dress with only bright red lips.

Meanwhile, last week, Jennifer Aniston, in Morrocco for the opening of a luxury hotel, stuck with her classic simple style in a backless black sheath and minimal jewelry.

Upgrade: Amber Rose Tones Down

Posted by babu 10:20am GMT

Almost any look would be an upgrade from the spandex bodysuits that made "model" and Kanye West girlfriend Amber Rose a red carpet sensation.

While Rose's recent bustier looks are on trend with others we have seen on the red carpet, the tone-on-tone cream color of the one she wore to the "Me and Orson Welles" premiere lends a little more sophistication to the style than her last molded metal attempt.

What do you think of her latest look? Is it an upgrade?

Trend to Try: Natalie Portman's Rainbow Brights

Posted by babu 1:19am GMT

Maybe I won't actually mix four completely different shades to pull off my next party look, but seeing Natalie Portman, at a NYC screening of her film "Brothers," definitely makes me crave her candy-colored style.

Her recent Jason Wu dress and electric-hued accessories (including $80 Aldo Segura peeptoe heels) is proof that with simple styling, shockingly bright shades can look downright demure.

AMA Red Carpet Royalty: A Diva, A Queen and Stylish Ladies

Posted by babu 12:35pm GMT

Since leaving "American Idol," Paula Abdul has really upgraded her fashion game. Her black gown at last night’s American Music Awards was Oscar-worthy. But not one to leave ALL the crazy at home, Paula’s dress required two handlers to move her down the red carpet (pic below). Let’s hope she didn’t have to use the restroom last night.

Rihanna is the reigning queen of dramatic style, and the laser-cut roses in her Marchesa dress reminded me of the Queen of Hearts from "Alice in Wonderland."

Alicia Keys loves color and stood out among last night’s many black and silver dresses in her blue Giorgio Armani jewel-encrusted dress and coordinated heels. I love this look for a music awards event since it has a bit of flash and edge.

Carrie Underwood wore another great Theia dress that showed off her love of shine, while Nicole Kidman (who was at the event to support husband Keith Urban) chose a lace Balenciaga dress that was ideal for the actress’s feminine, sophisticated style.

Check out Paula's personal dress handlers:

Celebrity Misfit: Mariah Carey’s Jacket Comes Up Short

Posted by babu 12:06am GMT

Singer (and now, legitimate actress) Mariah Carey helped turn on the holiday lights at a shopping center in London on November 19, but her choice of outfit may get her a lump of coal in her stocking come December.

Oh, Mariah, your acting career is back on track with your highly praised role in the film “Precious.” But sadly, there are only bad reviews for your mini sweater. And, is that a spandex catsuit? Mimi, let’s leave that look for Amber Rose.

What do you think of Mimi's mini jacket?
