Style Showdown: Khloe Kardashian vs. Blake Lively

Posted by babu 6:38pm GMT

Reality TV star Khloe Kardashian wore a plum-colored Alexander Wang dress with beautiful drape detailing to the Famous Cupcakes Beverly Hills Grand Opening last week. "Gossip Girl" Blake Lively was spotted in the same short sensation while shooting for the show back in August.

Though I'm not really sure what I think about Khloe's cheetah and lace booties, I love the way this dress flatters her every curve.

Who looks prettier in plum?

Anna Sui Q&A: New York City Cool

Posted by babu 3:28pm GMT

We talked to Anna Sui just before her Spring 2010 show at New York Fashion Week and the highly anticipated release of her “Gossip Girl” line for Target. Read on to find out which character on the show is her favorite! Plus, Anna put together a lookbook of famous faces wearing her clothes. Take a peek by clicking on the image below.

Looking back at who’s worn your designs over the years, are there any surprises?

Of course I’m enormously flattered, especially when it happens to be someone I’m also a “fan” of, such as Sofia Coppola, Cher and Anita Pallenberg. But I was secretly thrilled inside when we saw Miley Cyrus in my dress performing on “Good Morning America.” It was a big honor.

If you could dress any celebrity whom you haven’t worked with yet, who would it be, and why?

Elizabeth Taylor. She was always my favorite — the absolute pinnacle of true Hollywood glamour, with the most beautiful eyes and sultry style.

When you’re planning a new collection for a fashion show, how do you prepare for it?

It’s all connected; each element is taken into account, much like a novel or movie. A great deal of planning and forethought goes into each production. My fashion show is a “show” … there is a theme and a story; there’s definitely a theatrical element. Each look represents an entire world of Anna Sui, from head to toe.

Which other designers, current or past, have had the most influence on your career?

Zandra Rhodes, Ossie Clark, Marimekko, Rudi Gernreich, Biba.

You’ve been a major force in fashion design since the 1980s. Do you have a favorite era or season?

I always like the 1960s, of course … and the entire 19th century.

You’ve designed everything from red-carpet looks to ready-to-wear and now a new line for Target. How was this line different?

I think designer partnerships with mass retailers are a great way to bring fashion to everyone. I was able to select a “muse of creative inspiration,” which was the focus of the collection. It was an exciting challenge to try to interpret my aesthetic into a mass-produced product with a specific inspirational source.

You’ve designed the line around the characters on “Gossip Girl.” What was your thinking behind the looks?

Jenny
is the quintessential downtown girl who’s closest to my heart. Serena is a bit more serious; I wanted to loosen her up and invite her to have some fun with her outfits.

OK, here’s our lightning round of questions. Ready?

Favorite color? Purple.

Favorite fabric? Velvet.

Favorite midnight snack? Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia.

Person you’d most like to meet — past or present? Michelle Obama.

Guilty pleasure? Shopping at flea markets.

Quality you most admire in a person? Loyalty.

Favorite getaway? London.

Oscars or Grammys? Oscars.

Most surprising thing on your current inspiration board? Doctor Dolittle.

Item or trend we’ll never see in your collection? Never say never.

Dare to Wear: Sophia Bush

Posted by babu 3:20pm GMT

Kids, cover your eyes! The usually polished, and considerably covered, Sophia Bush was just caught doing a nude scene, and it wasn't on her TV show "One Tree Hill."

The actress wore a see-through lace mini from the Max Azria Fall 2009 collection to Hollywood Life's Sixth Annual Hollywood Style Awards. Not only does this dress appear to be cutting off her circulation (maybe it's part of a new dieting tactic?), but it's a far cry from the feminine (and flowy) blouses and gowns that everyone's become accustomed to (and have enjoyed) seeing her in.

She's also pictured kissing the talented designer (who happens to be one of my favorites) at the event, so maybe this falls somewhere under the law "Don't bite the head of the designer that dresses you"?!

Would you dare to wear this look?

Try Tights: Wardobe Update for Under $20

Posted by babu 11:05am GMT

While most of us can't afford the $2500
Christopher Kane dress reality star Whitney Port
(of MTV's "The City") wore to the recent Video Music Awards, we definitely can afford a pair of bright tights for fall that can transform any LBDs in the closet right now.

I love how how designer site
MyTheresa.com paired bright red tights with a Kane dress similar to Port's to completely change the feel of the daring style into something much more wearable for weekends, holiday parties, or even for the office, for those who work in a creative field.

And, make sure to scour discount stores like Marshall's and TJ Maxx for lots of tights, often at 1/2 off.

Rule Breakers or Trend Makers: A Shorts Story for Fall

Posted by babu 11:39pm GMT

While the rest of us on the East Coast start to bundle up in layers, LA celebs are still rocking shorts for the red carpet.
Whitney Port and Rachel Bilson work the high-low style by pairing luxe designer bags with low key cool shorts at fashion events in LA. And actresses Rose Byrne and Gwyneth Paltrow (already a trendsetter back in February of this year) added a bit of shine to their hot pants.

How do you feel about the cold-weather shorts trend?

Downgrade: Paris Hilton Skips Class

Posted by babu 11:47pm GMT

It's hard to make a skin-tight leopard bustier dress look classy. But back in 2007 at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas, Paris looked lovely in her leopard
Dolce & Gabbana number. [With such a bold print, it's more chic to trade matchey-matching accessories for a coordinated mix of luxe-looking neutral ones.] Purr-fect, Paris.

Fast forward a few years, and Hilton stalked the red carpet in NYC wearing a less impressive neon cat dress by Diane von Furstenberg with questionable hair extensions as well.

What do you think of Paris Hilton's latest leopard look?

Work to Weekend: Naomi Watts' Modern Classic Silhouette

Posted by babu 8:11pm GMT

You have a white shirt, right? And flat front well-fitting pants, yes? Now, just add a smart cropped jacket like the one Naomi Watts wore to a recent film premiere in Spain. Keep a pair of modern-cut heels like Naomi’s (consider investing in these ultra comfortable python Ivanah platforms from Coach, below) nearby to swap with serious work pumps or flats before meeting friends for after-work dinner.

If you need to buy one of the season’s shorter jackets, trust me, you will get your money’s worth from this versatile piece. You can even toss it over a dress for evening. Get inspired by more than http://www.mylifetime.com/all-the-looks/search?term=jacket&filters=tid:327

This Week's Fab Five

Posted by babu 7:38pm GMT

This week was all about...owning your femininity. And the winners are...

Camilla Belle in a taupe and flamingo pink ruched Louis Vuitton number at the Louis Vuitton show during Paris Fashion Week. The combination of these colors is classy and refreshing.

Sophia Bush sporting a one-shouldered, ruffled BCBG Max Azria gown at Los Angeles Philharmonic's Inaugural Gala. While the many tiers of this dress scream femininity, the complexity of the steel-purple hue oozes cool.

Demi Moore in a strapless, black gown with slit in front at the opening of the Middle East International Film Festival (MEIFF). Her three-stranded statement necklace adds a playful, yet still sophisticated, touch.

Leighton Meester wearing a splashy, Louis Vuitton dress with ruffle detail in front at the Louis Vuitton show during Paris Fashion Week. Leighton's high socks and platform heels give this polished ensemble a sexy schoolgirl vibe.

Kristen Bell in a chiffon and lace Marchesa mini dress at the "Couples Retreat" premiere in Los Angeles. The whimsical design balances out the revealing neck and hem lines to create a fairytale princess effect.

Which actress's womanly wardobe pick do you want most?

Dare to Wear: Leigh Lezark

Posted by babu 6:41pm GMT

Perhaps the most entertainment I've had during Paris Fashion Week this time around has been watching the Leigh Lezark show unfold.

The American DJ and model (who I'd never heard of until a few weeks ago) first channeled her inner hipster with a Givenchy Resort 2010 ensemble (note: I still don't know what that ghost mask is all about) for the Givenchy show. Next, she took the peacock trend to an entirely new level in a Giambattista Valli peacock feather coat at the Giambattista Valli show. Not skipping a beat, Leigh then went tribal (space alien?) in a black and white bodysuit by Chanel for the Chanel show. And, just when I thought I'd seen it all, she wore what looks like an oversized bra to the John Galliano show.

All I have left to say about all this is "What the wardrobe?!"

Would you dare to wear this look?

Two Ways to Wear: Fitted Forties-Inspired Dresses

Posted by babu 12:06am GMT

Want to know how to get dressed in under 5 minutes? Talk a cue from Jennifer Lopez and Nelly Furtado who rely on a forties-style fitted dress.

Lopez proves that one of these classic shifts works in Miami where she wore hers, while the pale grey Elie Saab dress (from his Fall 2009 ready-to-wear line) singer Furtado wore to the designer's Spring show in Paris screams "chic" in any country.

Ladies, if you don't have one of these dresses already in your closet, run out and get one fast since they magically create curves where none exist or show off an envious hour-glass figure, all while giving off a demure, sophisticated vibe.

If color's your thing, then go for a bold shade, and the effect is still the same. Like I said, magic.
