Bad Celebrity Coat Pairings

Posted by babu 6:15pm GMT

When it comes to fashion, few things frustrate me more than when a celebrity seemingly spends hours putting together a red-carpet look, and then ruins it by throwing on an uncomplimentary (or just plain bad) cover-up. Recent offenders include Kelly Osbourne, Kate Bosworth and January Jones, all of whom successfully spoiled their evening gowns with jackets that proved ill-fitting, too casual or (in Kate's case) both (add to that too hairy and from a different season).

Perhaps they should take a cue from Olivia Palermo, who's mastered not only the art of coat pairing, but also layering.

Which rookie's coat pairing proved worst?

Trend to Try: Orange Blazers

Posted by babu 1:15pm GMT

Orange (or as many savvy retailers are calling it "Papaya") has splashed onto the fashion scene, managing to touch everything from blazers and denim to handbags and footwear (the beauty market is right on cue with similarly citrusy lip color and nail polish shades).

Celebs like Whitney Port and Olivia Palermo are taking the chic approach to the colorful trend with a variety of tangerine and melon-hued blazers (find out where to get one here).

Second Helpings: Olivia Palermo Recycles Her Topshop Skirt

Posted by babu 2:08pm GMT

No stranger to recycling key wardrobe pieces, Olivia Palermo stepped out in her highly coveted, pleated Topshop skirt at the 2011 Green Auction: A Bid To Save The Earth event, just a little over a month after debuting it at the Marchesa presentation during New York Fashion Week.

While the trend-setting reality TV star took an edgy approach to styling, pairing her pleated skirt with a partial-leather Alexander Wang blazer, for Fashion Week, she softened things up a bit with a lacy Rachel Roy top and handheld bag for the auction.

Get the effect of Olivia Palermo's pleated skirt with the Madewell Poet Skirt, $98, at madewell.com.

Can't Live Without My: Leopard Booties

Posted by babu 4:08pm GMT

I recently attended a Charlotte Russe preview at which I passed up a pair of leopard booties. BIG. MISTAKE.

"The City" star and personal style crush Olivia Palermo is the latest celeb to have fallen for the leopard shoe trend, working a pair of leopard-print, lace-up Charlotte Olympia booties into what appears to be her every London Fashion Week ensemble.

Get the look with the Suede Leopard Bootie, $35.50, charlotterusse.com.

Trend to Try: Color Blocking

Posted by babu 11:10am GMT

Much thanks to Gucci (the designer behind all four of the colorful creations above), fashion-forward celebrities like Camilla Belle, Katy Perry (pictured on the latest issue of Elle), Jennifer Lopez and Olivia Wilde are painting the red carpet with a rainbow of colors, the bolder the contrast the better.

Try livening up your neutrals with a saturated blouse or a blazer and, once you have a little experience under your belt, try your creative hand at a completely color blocked look.

Red-Carpet Recap: 2010 Footwear News Achievement Awards

Posted by babu 3:39pm GMT

Stars were polished to perfection at the 2010 Footwear News Achievement Awards, which took place in New York last night.

The most notable celeb styles included those of Jessica Alba (in a fitted Dolce & Gabbana menswear suit and the infamous Christian Louboutin Pigalle studded pumps), Blake Lively (in a sage-colored Prabal Gurung wrap dress and partially-sheer Christian Louboutin booties) and, my personal style crush, Olivia Palermo (in a lace blouse, bronze skirt and cardigan ensemble and bow-tie booties).

Which star's polished style is your fave?

Feathered Skirts: Trend or Foe?

Posted by babu 2:00pm GMT

Fearless fashionistas like designer Whitney Port, Olivia Palermo and Kerry Washington have been getting frisky with feathered skirts.

While some may find the trend playful, others (meaning me) can't help but think the celebs look like they have ostriches sticking out of the bottom of their shirts.

What's your take on feathered skirts?

Trend to Try: The Looped Belt

Posted by babu 2:35pm GMT

Whether worn casually with pants or a full shirt and top or given the five star treatment while wrapped around the latest designer duds, belts are proving the IT accessory of the season, the lengthier and loop-worthy the better.

Follow the lead of celebs like Olivia Palermo and Kourtney Kardashian and dress up a classic style with a wild print, or add a rugged touch to any wardrobe piece (including outerwear) with brown leather a la Kate Bosworth.

Layering Leather: Trend or Foe?

Posted by babu 5:33pm GMT

It's almost impossible to find the always stylish Olivia Palermo with a hair out of place, so you can imagine my surprise when I came across this picture of "The Hills" star wearing this outcast of an oversize leather bomber jacket as it is (I'm assuming it's her boyfriend's since she was out with him that night), let alone layered over a leather dress.

While I'll often add an edgy touch to a look with a faux leather jacket, handbag or accessories, I tend to believe leather looks best when layered over more feminine fabrics and broken up in between.

What's your take on layering leather?
