Costume Institute Gala HITS

Posted by babu 12:49pm GMT

Of all the red-carpet events (dare I even say the Oscars?!), there's nothing I look forward to every year more than the Costume Institute Gala. The proverbial spring cleaning of events, there's just something about the Metropolitan Museum of Art that awakens the celeb style soul at a point when it's gotten dim.

Some of my favorite looks of the night included...

Camilla Belle
ravishing in a bright Jason Wu ball gown. Cream Chantilly lace padding along the bust line added more dimension to the draped chiffon masterpiece, and I'm officially assigning cherry red as Camilla's IT color.

Gisele Bundchen getting leggy in a fringed LBD with basket weave detailing throughout. If I had to describe the supermodel's post-baby ensemble in one word, it would be FIERCE.

Kerry Washington
working it in an asymmetrical Thakoon for Gap gown. While just one of several designer collaborations for Gap to have been modeled throughout the evening (and to be auctioned off in the Gap Gala Auction starting tomorrow), this one was by far my favorite.

J. Lo (or shall I say J. Glow?) sparkling in a Zuhair Murad Spring 2010 Couture gown. Perhaps my favorite dress of the night, this beaded beauty was no short of exquisite.

Gwen Stefani
in a shimmering cream gown with sexy, tulle overlay along the bust. Not surprisingly, the singer topped off her romantic-meets-rocker gown with a red lip.

Dare to Wear: Anne Hathaway

Posted by babu 1:52pm GMT

Anne Hathaway chose a taupe Vivienne Westwood gown for the “Alice In Wonderland” Royal World Premiere in London last night.

While I love it when Anne experiments with different designers (she often sticks with Armani or Prada), I just don't think this dress is a good fit for her.

That said, her makeup looks great.

This Week's Fab Five

Posted by babu 3:40pm GMT

This week was all about strapless sheaths and one-shouldered wonders. And the winners are...

Demi Moore wearing a strapless Marchesa dress at the "Valentine's Day" premiere in London. I love how oversized organza flower appliqus add extra dimension to this dress without causing it to lose its shape altogether. While I may have preferred this dress with nude pumps, I do like how Demi bypassed a necklace to keep the flowers in focus.

Iman looking stunning in an Angel Sanchez gown at amfAR’s New York Gala to kick off Fall 2010 Fashion Week. The fan-like pleating along the asymmetrical neckline and bodice of this gown is nothing short of mesmerizing. The gown's rich, emerald shade and Iman's eccentric jewels complete the class act (which is my favorite here).

Jennifer Garner rocking a nude and black Valentino sheath from the pre-fall collection at the "Valentine's Day" premiere in Los Angeles. The alternate draping of leather and lace gave this dress a naughty vs. nice appeal.

Anne Hathaway working it in a feathered Marchesa mini at the "Valentine's Day" premiere in Los Angeles. The playful nature of the feathers and bright cobalt shade of this dress really capture the actress's youth without going overboard (the sleek design and the fact that the dress materials are kept the same shade help keep things tame). I keep a close watch on Anne for moments just like this.

Emily Blunt enchanting in a Grecian-inspired Kaufman Franco dress at "The Wolfman" premiere in Los Angeles. While I probably wouldn't have thought to pair a dress with such intricate waist detailing with an equally complex headpiece, I was extremely pleased with the outcome. I also love how the asymmetrical hem falls short of covering up Emily's gladiator-style heels.

Red-Carpet Recap: Three Dresses for "Valentine's Day"

Posted by babu 12:04pm GMT

Are you ready for "Valentine's Day" -- the movie? At the star-studded premiere of the celeb-packed new film, Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Biel showed off their dress picks for the big night.

Garner glowed in a sexy Valentino strapless style that oozed sex appeal (the mommy to two still has it!), while Hathaway went even shorter with her sassy Marchesa mini. And Biel revealed a more over-the-top gown (in V-Day red) by red carpet dress master Oscar de la Renta.

Downgrade: Anne Hathaway's Sloppy Suit Is a Washout

Posted by babu 3:51pm GMT

As someone who regularly takes the award for "Best Dressed" on the red carpet, how could Anne Hathaway even consider announcing the nominees this morning for this year's Oscars in such an unflattering and drab Chloe suit?

Not that Anne needs to be dressed in the color of an Easter egg to be nominated for her own style award.

For example, in Paris, just last week, the actress stunned fans in a chic -- yet colorless -- Giorgio Armani look during the designer's recent couture show.

Is this star's recent look an "upgrade" or a "downgrade" from her last one?

This Week's Fab Five

Posted by babu 4:39pm GMT

This week was all about bright colors and highlighted hips. And the winners are...

Kate Hudson sizzling in a backless Emilio Pucci gown at the 2010 SAG Awards. I love the crystal embellishments cutting down the hip and into the back of this dress, which happens to be my favorite of the week.

Reese Witherspoon rocking a lacy Jason Wu number at the Unforgettable Evening event benefiting EIF’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund. Synonymous with Reese's tongue-in-cheek style, this dress is equal parts sweet and sassy.

Diane Kruger in an ochre-colored Jason Wu gown at the 2010 SAG Awards. The chiffon ruching all over the bodice of this gown, created by the same designer behind Michelle Obama's Inaugural Ball gown, is no short of breathtaking.

Anne Hathaway
rocking a cream and silver Armani Prive dress during Paris Fashion Week. I just LOVE it when Anne wears Armani because she always does so with such poise. The metallic sweeping through this dress also creates an almost futuristic effect to keep everything fresh.

Lea Michele
in a plunging Catherine Malandrino gown at the 2010 SAG Awards. The emerald green shade of this gown looks amazing against the "Glee" star's olive skin. I also love the ruffles along the neckline.

Style Showdown: Chanel Iman vs. Anne Hathaway

Posted by babu 12:28pm GMT

Chanel Iman showed off her playful side at the Victoria's Secret Show After-Party in a tiered Marc Jacobs dress, the same one previously worn by Anne Hathaway to the 18th Annual Empire State Pride Agenda Fall Dinner in late October.

Maybe I've just seen Anne in too many sheaths, but I think this rainbow-accented frock is much more in tune with Chanel's youthful style.

Dare to Wear: Anne Hathaway

Posted by babu 5:46pm GMT

I absolutely love this Lela Rose dress worn by Anne Hathaway to Variety's First Annual Power Of Women Luncheon, just not on Anne Hathaway.

Though the classy, origami-style folding detail along the right side, as well as the fact that this dress is strapless, fits the actress's usual style to a "T," Anne's milky white skin doesn't give the marigold hue (which reminds me of the slightly darker shade worn by Ginnifer Goodwin to the "He's Just Not That Into You Premiere" earlier this year) the justice it deserves.

On another note, I also think the dress color clashes with that of Anne's mauve-toned lipstick. I would have preferred to see her wear a nude lip shade.

Would you dare to wear this look?
