Cecilia Motwani

34, New York, NY

What was the first garment you ever made?

Not available. I was probably nine.

What's playing on your iPod when you're designing?

I get bored quickly. One hour, the '80s; then rock (Nirvana and the like); sometimes classical.

When did you realize you had designer potential?

When people pointed it out when I was a kid.

Favorite designer(s)?

My dear McQueen, genius and artful. His exhibit at the Met pushed me to start professionally in the States.

Current occupation?

Fashion designer and legal interpreter.

Can you describe past jobs you've had?

Banker/ nanny/ chef apprentice/ hotel concierge, etc.

What is a fashion must?

Style, please, style, your own!!!

What is your design training?

Pretty much self-taught. I attended some classes at FIT.

What are your strengths as a designer?

I am very versatile and open-minded.

What are your weaknesses as a designer?

I get flooded by ideas and can.t edit without effort.

What's influenced your designs over the years?

In the past, the women in my life. They were always very clean, elegant and extremely feminine. In the present, my love for other art media and philosophy in general.

What's your favorite material or fabric to work with?

I would wrap the world in 4 ply silk!!!!!!! But love them all. I don.t hate poly, it just doesn.t do justice to anything.

What's the item you're most proud of designing?

My jackets. The tailoring was an obsession of mine since very young and I worked very hard to get satisfied with my craftsmanship.

Do you prefer sketching or draping?

I hate sketching. I do specs and flats for my own reference. I only sketch for show and when I have plenty of time (almost never).

Do you prefer patterns or solids?

Both; need balance, though. Solids need to be textured or whimsically cut, otherwise I feel disappointed.

What are your favorite colors?

Love them all! I would say cobalt and bright yellow inspire me. Red is what I would wear most of the time.

What's your biggest fear as a designer?

I don't have fears; they enslave you. Take me or leave, I am me and my circumstance.

What fashion faux pas drives you crazy?

I hate white shoes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What's the ugliest thing you've ever worn?

I regret I have to wear flats because of my injured tendons. May God give me some grace.

Who are your favorite style icons?

My clients. They have the guts to wear whatever they feel happy in and their signature, that.s style.

If you designed for the first lady, what would you design for her?

A two-piece dress.

What celebrity would you like to design for?

Ellen DeGeneres. I would design her a jacket with a tail and a big convertible lapel in a print I would design, a pair of silk jeans and a lace cut-out tee with open back.

Who's your supermodel muse?

Cindy Crawford.

What do you look for in a model?

The walk, for God.s sakes, some of them walk as if they were carrying the world on them. Posture, posture, posture and then attitude, yeah, if you don.t feel it, don't model it.

If you had to name your label, you'd call it . . .

I already call it something.

If you weren't designing, you'd be . . .
