Amanda Valentine

33, Nashville, TN

Describe your family.

Mormon and loud.

Current occupation?

Designer of VALENTINE VALENTINE, wardrobe stylist.

Past jobs?

Pizza maker, janitor, and makeup counter manager, to name a few.

Neighborhood cat we feed and call "Trash Cat."

Panda, Aunty Pandy.

When did you realize you had designer potential?

When I took my mom’s old pantyhose and drapes and made a killer biker chick look.

First garment you ever made?

See above. Either that or totally inappropriate outfits for my Barbies. (Tube tops and miniskirts are easy things to make, okay?)

What's your design training/schooling, etc.?

I started sewing at age 8, private sewing lessons in junior high and high school, Bachelor of Science in Clothing Textiles and Design from the University of Nebraska. Working in fashion since then!

Have you won any awards for your designs/work related to design?

2012, 2013 Nashville’s Favorite Fashion Designer.

Strengths as a designer?

I understand how modern, creative, edgy women want to dress.

Weaknesses as a designer?

I see all sides to a design dilemma and [used to] get jumbled by it.

What are your influences?

I love Ancient Egypt, West African beading, and South American textiles. I’m also obsessed with countercultures -- flappers, hippies, punks, hip-hop -- and I love trying to mash them up.

What's playing on your iPod when you're designing?

Changes constantly. I have a really unhealthy appetite for new music. Right now? Wavves, Bass Drum of Death, Gauntlet Hair, and Ty Segall Band.

Favorite material or fabric to work with?

Leather, rayon and jersey.

Item you're most proud of designing?

AMy wedding dress. Macramé and braided top and huge billowy silk Georgette skirt.

Favorite designer(s)?

Yves Saint Laurent (the original AND Slimane’s current incarnation), Rodarte, Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler, Philip Lim, Jeremy Scott. I’m all over the place. I love the brands Acne and Opening Ceremony.

Sketch or drape?

Flat pattern!

Patterns or solids?

There is a time a place and a place for everything.

Favorite colors?

Primary colors.

Biggest fear as a designer?

Making a really ugly dress on national television. Since I’ve already done that I have no fear.

Fashion must?

Everyone should have a worn out t-shirt they’ve had for 20 years.

Fashion faux pas that drives you crazy?

I promise I spend very little mental energy judging other people’s clothing. Borrrrrrring.

Ugliest item of clothing/accessory you've worn?

No fashion regrets. They have all been lessons in style.

Favorite style icon?

Grace Jones, David Bowie.

What would you design for the First Lady?

I wanna see Michelle rock some separates. Maybe a slouchy blazer and some straight-leg jeans. Though I hate the idea of covering those arms…

Celebrity you wish you could design for?

Lupita Nyong’o (a bright minidress), Rhianna (tiny crop top and big pants), St. Vincent (crazy daywear), Jack White (insane suit), Gwen Stefani (anything always and forever).

Favorite supermodel muse?

"House of Style"-era Cindy Crawford.

If you had to name your label, you'd call it...

I already have my label named! VALENTINE VALENTINE, the name of my Danish ancestor who came to America. Originally was going to be the name of a band that my brother and I are going to start SOMEDAY.

If you weren't designing, you'd be...

Playing bass in a metal band.

Dream place to set up your business?

Dream place to set up your business?

In the middle of one of the Pyramids of Giza.

Websites that feature your work?

How were you described as a kid?

Quiet and creative.

Why do you think you're easy to live with?

I’m a friggin’ sweetheart. But I am technically an introvert- so people get under my skin quickly and easily. I just hide it very well. :)

Favorite hangout?

Playing darts at a dive bar with my husband

Working out, going to shows and movies and art galleries, eating snacks.

Favorite movies and TV shows?

My husband and I see everything at the art house theatre and I like to balance that with plenty of trash TV. I also love to go back and watch old series: "A Different World," "Melrose Place," "Cheers."
