Q&A Alexander's Take
QDescribe your family. AYes I can, in one word: actors.
QCurrent occupation? ACostume construction for Broadway.
QPast jobs? AMakeup artist for editorials, runway shows, etc., for about 10 years.
QWhen did you realize you had designer potential? AWhen I was color-coordinating my clothes in elementary school.
QFirst garment you ever made? AI made it when I was about 14 or so. It was a wool tweed high-waisted A-line skirt with a slit in the back.
QWhat's your design training/schooling, etc.? AAA degree at FIDM LA.
QStrengths as a designer? AMy fine hand.
QWeaknesses as a designer? AMy sketching.
QWhat are your influences? AMusic and the style that goes with said music. I've always had a very close-knit relationship with the two. I find they go hand in hand with creating a look.
QWhat's playing on your iPod when you're designing? AEither opera, electro or Broadway musicals. Or a combination of...
QFavorite material or fabric to work with? AI find myself gravitating toward upholstery fabrics. They always have the best prints!
QItem you're most proud of designing? AMy 2-D outfit for the famous New York drag queen Acid Betty.
QFavorite designer(s)? AViktor & Rolf, McQueen, Mugler (original house), Rick Owens, Galliano, Gareth Pugh, Westwood, Comme Des Garcons….
QSketch or drape? ADrape.
QPatterns or solids? APatterns, large ones!
QFavorite colors? AA nice muted violet.
QBiggest fear as a designer? AI always need to learn more!
QFashion must? AA COMPLETE look. Not just clothes, but the hair and makeup done too!
QFashion faux pas that drives you crazy? AUGGS! and this crazy LAZY fad where people think sweatsuits are fashion! I gag when I see people in public in their pajamas.
QUgliest item of clothing/accessory you've worn? AI was into the '70s look when I was younger… ugh.
QFavorite style icon? ATilda Swinton.
QWhat would you design for the First Lady? ADefinitely something a bit younger and less hyper-conservative. Classy with an edge.
QCelebrity you wish you could design for? ATilda Swinton. I would love to just go to town and drape like 30 yards of fabric in one dress especially with the asymmetrical feel she works on the red carpet. Love it.
QFavorite supermodel muse? AShe's not really around anymore, but I always loved Nadja Auermann's look, especially when she bleached her eyebrows!
QIf you had to name your label, you'd call it... AI named it Alexander Pope already.
QIf you weren't designing, you'd be... AI have no idea… I would be designing.
QPlaces/cultures you wish you could design for? AI live for Europe. I've been to London and just fell in love. I find myself inspired by English designers; I guess that makes me an Anglomaniac.
QDream place to set up your business? ANew York is perfect.
QWebsites that feature your work? AAlexanderApope.com
QHow were you described as a kid? AAdorable.
QHow are you described by your family and friends? ADead inside.
QWhy do you think you're easy to live with? AI still think I make a good roommate, but my past 15 roommates most likely wouldn't agree. But then again, I can say the same about them. I make a good roommate because I am clean, social and I like to cook, and I never cook for only one person….
QFavorite hangout? ANowhere right now. I haven't found a new hangout for myself that I like.
QHobbies? AGoing to amusement parks! I love them!
QFavorite movies and TV shows? ATV shows: "The Good Wife," "Downton Abbey," "American Dad," "Sherlock." Movies: "Carrie," "Star Trek 2" (out now!), "The Shining,"" Triangle," "Melancholia," any Harry Potter film!
QFavorite books/authors? ADaphne Du Maurier, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Charlotte Bronte
QFavorite websites? AStyle.com, Screamscape.com, Netflix.com, AlexanderApope.com
QiPhone/Android/Blackberry? AI have an Android but hate it. iPhone for me next!
QFast food or gourmet? AGourmet, but I do have my guilty pleasures...
QCooking or takeout? ACooking.
QFavorite foods? AI love sushi, I love Mexican, I love French fries.
QBeer or wine? AWine. I can't stand beer.
QGuiltiest pleasure? AFrench fries.
QBiggest pet peeve? ASpitting.
QHow did you end up auditioning for PR? AThis is my first time auditioning, and my close friend convinced me to.
QFavorite past PR designer? AMr. Siriano.
QChallenge you wish they'd bring back? AI like the "design something for Heidi" challenge. I mean, come on, she's a supermodel!
QChallenge you hope they don't? ADesigning for old/overweight people.
QYour take on team challenges: ANeither. I think they could be interesting, because sometimes a collaboration could be gold.
QWhat do you look for in a model? AHeight for sure; I like them tall. I find that I choose blondes more, and the most important thing is their walk. I just can't get past that if it isn't up to par.
QDo you think you can win "Project Runway"? AI think I can. I bring not only fashion but a pretty extensive costume background to the table, and I think that knowledge really helps me design some creatively interesting clothing...
