QDescribe your family. ALoving parents, an awesome older brother and sister-in-law, and two amazing nephews!
QCurrent occupation? AI work full-time designing and making my World of JAS and Pretty Snake collections. I also teach part-time in the textiles department at Rhode Island School of Design.
QPast jobs? AI've had so many different jobs before my brands took off. I've worked as a coffee-shop barista, sugar-cookie decorator, art handler, gallery assistant, movie-theater projectionist, candy-store manager, pastry baker and so much more!
QNicknames? AJoeJoe, Joey Stitches (because I'm always knitting or sewing), Joeyjoejoemangopants (was really into mango-colored pants in '00), Cheeseboy (I love cheese!).
QWhen did you realize you had designer potential? AI've always been pretty crafty, but it was when I was encouraged to push my work further as a student at RISD that I realized I had designer potential.
QFirst garment you ever made? AOne of my first garments was probably when I sewed neckties into the side seams of my pants .
QWhat's your design training/schooling, etc.? ABFA in painting and art history, University of Massachusetts, Amherst. MFA textile design, Rhode Island School of Design.
QStrengths as a designer? ARisk taker, unconventional thinker and material exploration.
QWeaknesses as a designer? ASometimes I make stuff that's just too strange.
QWhat are your influences? AI'm pretty much inspired by everything, ranging from antiques to rocks to the unknown.
QWhat's playing on your iPod when you.re designing? ASonic Youth, Robyn, Adult, Hole, White Ring, Jay-Jay Johanson, Jens Lekman, Hunx and His Punx, Asa-Chang and Junray, Slowdive, Elasté: Slow Motion Disco, Black Devil and more!
QFavorite material or fabric to work with? AYarn and paint!
QItem you're most proud of designing? AThe knitted dress-and-cardigan look from my thesis collection that the RISD museum bought for their permanent collection.
QFavorite designer(s)? AJC de Castelbajac, Walter van Beirendonck, Lanvin, Moonspoon Saloon, Christian Lacroix, Rei Kawakubo, Henrik Vibskov, Gareth Pugh
QSketch or drape? ABoth! For me, sketching and draping go hand in hand.
QPatterns or solids? ABoth all the time!
QFavorite colors? ANeon anything, lilac, orange, black, pink, and every other color.
QBiggest fear as a designer? AWhat's there to be scared about? Never hold back.
QFashion must? AHave fun with your look!
QFashion faux pas that drives you crazy? AGray heathered sweatpants anywhere.
QFavorite style icon? AGrace Jones, Leigh Bowery
QWhat would you design for the first lady? AAnything she wants!
QCelebrity you wish you could design for? AMarilyn Manson, Bjork or Kelly Osbourne. For Marilyn I would make a sweater that looked like it survived an apocalypse, and for Bjork I'd make a dress as beautiful as her mind. Not sure what I would make Kelly, but it would definitely be colorful and fun!
QFavorite supermodel muse? AAndrej Pejic is amazing.
QIf you had to name your label, you'd call it... AWORLD of JAS and PRETTY SNAKE
QIf you weren't designing, you'd be... AA food chemist or something in the sciences.
QPlaces/cultures you wish you could design for? AIt would be cool to be a fashion designer during ancient times for Cleopatra.

QWhy do you think you're easy to live with? AI make really good cakes, cookies and random baked goods, but sometimes I don't clean up so fast.
QFavorite hangout? AThe mallllllllllllll.
QHobbies? AHanging out with friends, beach adventures, antiquing, thrifting, road trips, going to new restaurants.
QFavorite movies and TV shows? AMovies: "Xanadu," "Clueless," "The Fourth Kind," "8mm" and anything by David Lynch, Lucio Fulci and Shion Sono. TV: "RuPaul`s Drag Race," "Workaholics," "American Horror Story," "Daria," "The Walking Dead," "Revenge," "90210" (original), "Saved by the Bell."
QFavorite books/authors? ANot sure, but "The Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology" is the last thing I read.
