Q: Nicknames?

A: JoeJoe, Joey Stitches (because I'm always knitting or sewing), Joeyjoejoemangopants (was really into mango-colored pants in '00), Cheeseboy (I love cheese!).

Q: When did you realize you had designer potential?

A: I've always been pretty crafty, but it was when I was encouraged to push my work further as a student at RISD that I realized I had designer potential.

Q: First garment you ever made?

A: One of my first garments was probably when I sewed neckties into the side seams of my pants .

Q: What's your design training/schooling, etc.?

A: BFA in painting and art history, University of Massachusetts, Amherst. MFA textile design, Rhode Island School of Design.

Q: Strengths as a designer?

A: Risk taker, unconventional thinker and material exploration.

Q: Weaknesses as a designer?

A: Sometimes I make stuff that's just too strange.

Q: What are your influences?

A: I'm pretty much inspired by everything, ranging from antiques to rocks to the unknown.

Q: What's playing on your iPod when designing?

A: Sonic Youth, Robyn, Adult, Hole, White Ring, Jay-Jay Johanson, Jens Lekman, Hunx and His Punx, Asa-Chang and Junray, Slowdive, Elasté: Slow Motion Disco, Black Devil and more!

Q: Favorite material or fabric to work with?

A: Yarn and paint!

Q: Item you're most proud of designing?

A: The knitted dress-and-cardigan look from my thesis collection that the RISD museum bought for their permanent collection.

A: JC de Castelbajac, Walter van Beirendonck, Lanvin, Moonspoon Saloon, Christian Lacroix, Rei Kawakubo, Henrik Vibskov, Gareth Pugh

Q: Sketch or drape?

A: Both! For me, sketching and draping go hand in hand.

Q: Patterns or solids?

A: Both all the time!

Q: Favorite colors?

A: Neon anything, lilac, orange, black, pink, and every other color.

Q: Biggest fear as a designer?

A: What's there to be scared about?Never hold back.

Q: Fashion must?

A: Have fun with your look!

Q: Fashion faux pas that drives you crazy?

A: Gray heathered sweatpants anywhere.

Q: Favorite style icon?

A: Grace Jones, Leigh Bowery

Q: What would you design for the first lady?

A: Anything she wants!

Q: Celebrity you wish you could design for?

A: Marilyn Manson, Bjork or Kelly Osbourne. For Marilyn I would make a sweater that looked like it survived an apocalypse, and for Bjork I'd make a dress as beautiful as her mind. Not sure what I would make Kelly, but it would definitely be colorful and fun!

Q: Favorite supermodel muse?

A: Andrej Pejic is amazing.

Q: If you had to name your label, you'd call it...


Q: If you weren't designing, you'd be...

A: A food chemist or something in the sciences.

Q: Places/cultures you wish you could design for?

A: It would be cool to be a fashion designer during ancient times for Cleopatra.

Q: Dream place to set up your business?

A: Paris or Antwerp.

Q: How were you described as a kid?

A: The Renaissance man.

Q: How are you described by your family and friends?

A: Hopefully the same!

Q: Why do you think you're easy to live with?

A: I make really good cakes, cookies and random baked goods, but sometimes I don't clean up so fast.

A: The mallllllllllllll.

Q: Hobbies?

A: Hanging out with friends, beach adventures, antiquing, thrifting, road trips, going to new restaurants.

A: Movies: "Xanadu," "Clueless," "The Fourth Kind," "8mm" and anything by David Lynch, Lucio Fulci and Shion Sono. TV: "RuPaul`s Drag Race," "Workaholics," "American Horror Story," "Daria," "The Walking Dead," "Revenge," "90210" (original), "Saved by the Bell."

Q: Favorite books/authors?

A: Not sure, but "The Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology" is the last thing I read.

A: The kitty glitter slot machine.

Q: How did you end up auditioning for PR?

A: Thought it would be fun and that I was sort of ready.This was my first time auditioning.

Q: Favorite past PR designer?

A: Jay McCarroll, Christian Siriano.

Q: Challenge you wish they'd bring back?

A: Candy store challenge!

Q: Challenge you hope they don't?

A: Kids' challenges seem really hard.

Q: Your take on team challenges:

A: Both! Depends on your team!

Q: What do you look for in a model?

A: Mostly experience, ability to walk and have good poses without too much direction.

Q: Do you think you can win "Project Runway"?

A: Yeah! I make awesome stuff!
