It’s time for ye olde team challenge again, and we’re finally beginning to realize ... that no one wants to work with Mila this season. Did you see the look of panic on their faces when Tim was assigning team members? It was like a scene from “Mean Girls.” Maybe they don’t like color blocking. Maybe they think that one girl with a dark bob haircut is one too many. Whatever the reason is, I don’t really understand it, because she hasn’t really done anything to warrant that much video-confessional whining.
Never mind, because Seth Aaron and Emilio are sittin’ in a tree! S-E-W-I-N-G! Somewhere in a vault, on a tape labeled “Bromance,” there is slow-motion footage of these two at Parsons, skipping through yards of dark denim together, culminating in a high-five. Never in the history of “Runway” has a team ever taken that much joy in a pairing — and it showed. Not only because they took home the win, but also because they made show history with the first double win for both designers.
In other news, I really wish Team Amy and Jonathan had watched an episode or two of “Gossip Girl” on their free Monday nights, because clearly that inspirational stroll through the Upper East Side was far from helpful. Amy’s design on Jonathan’s model Cerri looked like an apron I bought at Anthropologie last year. And, as you know, van der Woodsens don’t cook. Or wear that.

I have the unique experience of seeing episodes of “Project Runway” in a somewhat odd fashion. Normally I’m privy to the Rate the Runway photos before I actually see the garments within the context of the episode, and looking at this week’s pictures provided me with quite a guess-the-challenge challenge of my own. My hunches this week went something like this:
1. Create a garment using hair extensions as fabric?
2. Create a pair of pants inspired by literal sports-wear?
3. Create a garment that incorporates the strategic use of odd hats?
4. Create a garment for a female superhero?
As you can see, I was all kinds of, well, WRONG. But can you blame me? As I finally learned that the four natural elements were weaving all these designs together (as “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire played in my head), things started to make a lot more sense.
Now, on to the worst of the bunch!
I hate to say it, judges — and possibly world at large — but I didn’t think that Ben’s design was THAT awful.
First off, you knew it was curtains for him once they showed the ubiquitous “sad phone call home” scene. That’s never a promising moment. Personal inner turmoil of being separated from the outside world aside, that guy got thrown under the fashion bus way harder than he needed to be. Yes, his pants looked like a jockstrap gone wrong, but the color palette and the top/jacket combination with Alison’s hair and makeup actually made me go, “Hey, I’d like to wear that … from the waist up … sans shark teeth.” Models who have walked down the runway with unfinished hems, Michael Kors—dubbed “outrageous crotches” and booties hanging out did not receive the wrath this man must have felt on the runway.
Amy, however, I think had the more offending design by letting her “cauldron of hair” dress get way O.O.C. (Out of Control)! Holly’s extensions filling the bust of the dress didn’t match her own shade of blonde, so it was all the more noticeable that she was carrying around this odd papoose of hair. She may as well have had it filled with red extensions so at least it would resemble her element of fire. I think it creeped the judges out so much, it was all they could think about after a while.
Conversely, in a hey-I’m-gonna-remind-you-all-that-I’m-on-this-damn-show! moment of triumph, Jonathan scored his first win with his whimsical “laughter” dress, not just for himself or his model, Cerri (whose Irish accent I am OBSESSED with!), but for all pale people everywhere.
As one of your pasty brethren, Jonathan, I salute you.

If you've been thinking what I've been thinking lately ("Damn, Meryl Streep has been looking good this award season!"), you're probably also wondering who to thank for that. Look no further than "Project Runway"'s very own Chris March.
Chris designed Meryl's dresses for the Golden Globes and the Oscars (both pictured above). Congrats on creating a red carpet sensation — twice!

The unconventional-materials challenge always makes me scratch my head and wonder, “How’d they do that?” because, sure, you can design clothes, but can you execute that same vision when your chiffon is sandpaper and your muslin is, um, sheet metal? These are not items that Inherently lend themselves to style, elegance or even comfort, but when these contestants bring out their inner Coco MacGyver to create some amazing garments, I remember why I love this show.
Let’s get straight to the designs:
Literally the first words I wrote down upon seeing Emilio’s "pink string, washers, bolts and a dream" dress micro-dress bikini micro-bikini were WENDY PEPPER SEASON 1 EPISODE 1.
Emilio, thy name is Pepper.
Who can forget the dress Wendy made, when she was still the nicest lady from small-town Virginia, that was a fusion of balloons, breath mints, rope candy and insanity? It’s one of the classic awesomely bad looks in the show’s history. This was Emilio’s less edible version of that design.
After going over budget at the hardware store, Emilio finds himself scaling back to the bare minimum, which is completely the opposite of how much we saw of his model, Holly. Bless her six-foot-tall-Amazon-woman heart, the girl was nearly nekked on the runway. And, yes, her hair and makeup were very very, but she worked that getup like her life depended on it — and that was what saved Emilio from the chopping block. I don’t think Emilio necessarily took a risk; he simply was between a rock and a hard place, and had to pretend the outcome was a risk. The fact that Holly didn’t refuse to wear it (yeah, I’m talking about you, model from Season 4!), and looked surprisingly comfortable in it, saved him. (Plus, what was Emilio’s accessory, exactly? Her big Brigitte Bardot hair?)
Now, let’s move on to I Can’t Believe It’s Not Leather, by Jay. Stella “Leatha!” Zotis herself would have been fooled by this man’s masterful manipulation of the industrial black plastic trash bag. I was afraid for him during Brittany’s fitting-gone-wrong when she couldn’t get her pants over her foot (I’ve seen the woman in person, and if she’s can’t do it, there’s no hope for the rest of us!), because I really wanted him to show off his workmanship.
And let’s not forget the other star of the episode: Maya. That key necklace was perfection — and demonstration of an actual accessory. Janet Jackson circa 1989 would be all over it.
Poor Jesse. He needed shears and safety gloves to put his outfit together (who else was totally waiting for him to break out a blowtorch?), and he still went home. He thought it was the martini for Anthony (surprise, surprise), but he thought wrong. Watch his final video blog clip now, where he makes that pretty darn clear:
