Los Angeles, CA, Season 3

Bring us up to speed!

Since Season 3, I have been busy, busy, busy!!! I expanded my line Cosa Nostra into a brand with 3 labels under it, and then sold the company. Next I helped another local label expand their brand and open 4 retail stores in a year, and then sold out. And currently I am building my children’s fashion label, La Miniatura, into a lifestyle brand. In 2 short years La Miniatura has become one of the hottest kids’ labels out there. La Miniatura is being sold in Barneys, Bloomingdale’s, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Harrods, Selfridges, and many, many more stores.

What garment from your season of "Runway" do fans compliment you on the most?

The zipper dress and the yellow tartan-plaid couture gown.

What do you think you are best remembered for from your season?

Being the best designer to ever appear on "Project Runway" :) or hopefully for bringing zipper trim and edgy ready-to-wear to the surface of fashion.

Who has been your favorite client to design for?

Heather Graham.

What celebrities would you love to dress?

More for Heather Graham.

What are your strengths as a designer at this point in your career?

My greatest strength is the experience I have accumulated over the past 10 years with the various businesses I have built and worked with. I have been successful designing costumes for big music acts (from rap to rock) and all levels of men’s and women’s wear (from couture to ready-to-wear to mass market), and now I am leading the children’s fashion world with my label La Miniatura.

How has your design aesthetic changed since your time on the show, if at all?

I think, if anything, the eminent evolution of any designer means change. In my case, I have learned to divorce myself from the process. I have learned how to view what I do objectively and also without emotion when needed. This allows me to have an open mind and create more than if I were locked into me.

What are your favorite pieces/staple items in your closet?

Right now it’s my black and white snap-back hat from Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, and my new black New Balance 877 cross-trainers.

Which fashion rule do you think is begging to be broken?

That one should wear black to a funeral.

How do you choose what to pack for "All Stars"?

Ha!!! Well, it’s going to be work, so I pack to work. Comfort and style…cross-trainers and easy outfits, because I plan to be running the whole time.

What "Project Runway" challenges do you think are the best and worst of all time?

Best: Paris couture!! Worst: ???

Who is your favorite fellow "Project Runway" designer from any season?

Hmm…I don’t know that I have a favorite. Recently I got to get to know a few on "All Stars" and I loved them all!!! I really got along with Daniel, Seth Aaron, Michael, Korto, Christopher and Viktor.

What goes through your head when you see yourself on television?

"Who’s that guy???" "Is that how I sound??" "Is that how I look??" "Do I look short??" "Why did I do this??" "I love this show!!!!!"

What is the one thing fans still would be surprised to find out about you?

That I never go out at night. Never, ever, ever. And that I love early mornings and meditation.

What makes you All-Star material?

My creative vision.
