Q&A Laura Kathleen's Take

QBring us up to speed! AIn the past year I have begun a jewelry line called Love Armour. I am also releasing a fine jewelry line. We are planning to launch a Fall 2013 collection available in boutiques. Also, I'm getting married!!!
QWhat garment from your season of "Runway" do fans compliment you on the most? AProbably either the stilts gown or the avant-garde gown.
QWhat do you think you are best remembered for from your season? AEither "pretty and privileged" or helping other people sew...two opposites! Once we got into the season, I think people realized that I wasn`t so much that way and that I work very hard at what I love.
QWho has been your favorite client to design for? AI love designing for my local St. Louis customers/brides. St. Louis has been good to me!
QWhat celebrities would you love to dress? ADiane von Furstenburg (even though she is always in her own clothes!). Really, anyone who appreciates the design and wants to wear Laura Kathleen.
QWhat are your strengths as a designer at this point in your career? AMy strengths are that I understand fabric and have an eye for silhouettes that women feel confident wearing. Also, that I understand being a designer requires business sense to make a lucrative career. I'm still working on the right business model to allow the Laura Kathleen brand to grow and expand.
QHow has your design aesthetic changed since your time on the show, if at all? AOn the show it is hard to design how you would in "real life." This time I remembered to design without the restrictions of the show and imagine myself designing for LK and not "All Stars."
QWhat are your favorite pieces/staple items in your closet? AFURS! I get excited for winter because I know it's fur coat time! My favorite black boots, black skinny pants, all my jumpsuits and bodysuits. And all of the many sequined garments I own. I am convinced I have a rich old lady stuck somewhere inside me that tries to escape every now and then.
QWhich fashion rule do you think is begging to be broken? AThere are no rules in fashion. I think the rules are what keep people from being fashionable.
QHow do you choose what to pack for "All Stars"? A Jumpsuits, palazzo pants, sequins!! Lots of high heels... I had to leave the furs at home; it was summer.
QWhat "Project Runway" challenges do you think are the best and worst of all time? AI have no idea.
QWho is your favorite fellow "Project Runway" designer from any season? AI can't single one person out. Here is my list: Anya and Viktor (9), Michael D, Casanova, Ivy, Mondo(8), Althea (6). And there are many more than I very much enjoy!
QWhat goes through your head when you see yourself on television? ADid I look in the mirror?!? We are working so hard sometime you forget you are in HD on a big screen in a lot of people's homes.
QWhat is the one thing fans still would be surprised to find out about you? AI started a fashion design program at a charter school in downtown St. Louis four years ago. The students design and sew garments that are then modeled by them at an end-of-the-year fashion show. The proceeds go right back to the school. I teach every other day; it's a large part of my life.
QWhat makes you "All Star" material? AI'm a fast thinker and strong designer with a great work ethic. I know who I am and what I am trying to accomplish with my brand.
