Kayne Gillaspie

33, Nashville, TN

Bring us up to speed!

Since "Project Runway" I was hired by Benjamin Walk Corporation to design a line of women.s shoes under my label Johnathan Kayne. The shoes are sold in over 2,500 stores in over 40 countries. I was also hired as creative director/designer for an international prom company. I currently own the dress line Johnathan Kayne that is offered in over 250 stores in 10 countries. I sold my retail clothing store and have been focused on building my brand. Most recently, I just launched the 2013 Johnathan Kayne for Empire Intimates line, which is my first line to be 100% Made In The USA!!!!!

What garment from your season of "Runway" do fans compliment you on the most?

Fans love my "Modernize an Icon" Marilyn Monroe dress as well as the "Couture du Jour" gown I made in Paris.

What do you think you are best remembered for from your season?

I think people remember my Southern charm and sincere infatuation with Swarovski and all that glitters.

Who has been your favorite client to design for?

I was contacted by a nurse who works for a children's cancer hospital who had a very special patient. She told me the story of this young girl named Stephanie who was fighting her third battle with cancer, but was always optimistic and put the nurses in a great mood even though her health was unstable. She told me the family was struggling financially and could not afford a prom dress. As I met with Stephanie and her family and designed her dream dress, I had to fight back the tears as she told me her story and I saw her value of the hard life she had been dealt. I love all of my clients, but working with this young lady was truly a gift.

What celebrities would you love to dress?

Lady Gaga, Dolly Parton, Adele, Julia Roberts, Carrie Underwood, Charlize Theron, Kristen Chenoweth and of course Honey Boo Boo.

What are your strengths as a designer at this point in your career?

My strengths are in construction and knowing how to fit a woman's body. I dedicate my life to making women look and feel beautiful. I also am learning the business side of this creative field. Well, I think women should be dripping in crystals and beads every single day, so I am still working on the fact that some women like a simple, understated look. The Johnathan Kayne woman is NEVER understated.

How has your design aesthetic changed since your time on the show, if at all?

My designs are definitely more refined and affordable by women seeking a dress and/or shoes for any special occasion. Designing three collections per year, I have learned firsthand from my customers around the world what they are looking for.

What are your favorite pieces/staple items in your closet?

Metallic finish tailored classic black blazer, basic V neck Tee, Perfect fit low rise jeans and a great pair of pointed toe boots.

Which fashion rule do you think is begging to be broken?

I think almost every rule in fashion is begging to be broken, but if I had to choose one it would be not being able to wear white after Labor Day.

How do you choose what to pack for "All Stars"?

For many people fashion is a form of personal expression. For a fashion designer it is your livelihood. Then throw into the mix that you will be seen on international television as well as the Web. I packed more shoes and accessories than anything. I basically chose my favorite looks, from casual to formal, and prayed for the best.

What "Project Runway" challenges do you think are the best and worst of all time?

The worst challenge of all time had to have been the Postal Uniform Challenge from Season 1. The best challenge was of course the "Fit for a Queen" challenge from Season 3, because I won and got to dress Tara Connor, Miss USA, for Miss Universe.

Who is your favorite fellow "Project Runway" designer from any season?

I would have to say Mychael Knight from our season, because we have stayed very close friends and worked together on several occasions since. Our moms are also still friends since the show. We come from similar roots and are just good old Southern mama's boys.

What goes through your head when you see yourself on television?

"FML"...and "Do I look skinny?"

What is the one thing fans still would be surprised to find out about you?

I'm gay. LOL. And I have a tattoo and piercing below the waist.

What makes you "All Star" material?

I am a young fashion designer who has built a successful career and brand that is sold in over 40 countries, and will never stop until I die.
