Q&A Mondo's Take
QWhat have you been up to since your time on ''Project Runway''?
A Since the show I've had the opportunity to become an advocate for HIV/AIDS education/awareness. I rang the bell on The New York Stock Exchange with Liza Minnelli, Kenneth Cole and Cheyenne Jackson for AMFAR on December 1, World AIDS Day. I gave a speech in Washington, D.C., for UnAIDS, also on World AIDS Day. I had the honor to tell my story to Nancy Pelosi and Diana DeGette. I designed a special T-shirt for Piperlime benefiting AMFAR for World AIDS Day and again for Valentine's Day. I joined ''Runway'' alum Jack Mackenroth on a national HIV/AIDS education campaign for Merck called Living Positive by Design. I spoke at the opening ceremonies for AIDS Walk New York. I travel to colleges around the nation speaking to students about my story living with HIV. I've really taken on the responsibility to continue the conversation about HIV/AIDS after revealing my HIV on Project Runway.I also showed a F/W 2011 collection at El Paseo Fashion Week with Michael Costello and Christopher Collins.
QWhat garment from your season of .Runway. do fans compliment you on the most to this day?
A I hear about the Jackie Kennedy design and the HP Challenge design.
QWhat do you think you are best remembered for from your season?
A For revealing my HIV status on the runway after keeping it a secret for 10 years of my life.
QFavorite client?
A Heidi Klum :O)
QWhat celebrities would you love to dress?
A I would love to dress Hugh Jackman, but I'd love to design for Hailee Steinfeld.
QWhat are your strengths as a designer at this point in your career? Any weaknesses you're still working on?
A Strength: working under pressure. Weakness: second-guessing myself.
QHow has your design aesthetic changed since your time on the show, if at all?
A Hmmm, I'm not sure.
QWhat are your favorite pieces and staple items in your closet?
A My collection of Dr. Martens.
QWhich fashion rule do you think is begging to be broken?
A ALL OF THEM.
QHow do you choose what to pack for ''All Stars''?
A I pack everything.
QAfter being on the show, what ''Project Runway'' challenges do you think are the best and worst of all time?
A Best: New Balance for Heidi Klum. Worst: Trade garments with your neighbor, you have 5 hours, go!
QWho is your favorite fellow 'Project Runway' designer from any season, including yours, and why?
A MICHAEL COSTELLO, because we've had a lot of experiences with each other.
QWhat goes through your head when you see yourself on television?
A Do I really sound like that?!
QWhat is the one thing fans would be surprised to find out about you?
A That I have an evil twin.
QWhat makes you All-Star material?
A I write my own songs.
