Drop Dead Diva Wins Prism Award!

Posted By LifetimeLisaR 5:59pm GMT

Drop Dead Diva Prism Awards

Congratulations to "Drop Dead Diva" for winning big at this year's 15th Annual PRISM Awards! The series took home an award for their depiction of bipolar disorder in the Season 2 episode "Senti-Mental Journey" starring Broadway diva Faith Prince as Jane's mother.

What we saw on the small screen was Jane going to court for her recently arrested mother as she simultaneously faced her mother's struggles with bipolar disorder. Behind the scenes of "Drop Dead Diva," a psychiatrist spoke with the show's writers about the disorder and the latest developments in treatment for it.

"Any awards that recognize TV or films that explore the human condition in ways that shine light on disorders or conditions that the general public doesn't necessarily know about are a good thing," says "Drop Dead Diva" creator, executive producer (and Diva Dish-er!) Josh Berman.

The PRISM Awards are presented by the non-profit Entertainment Industries Council and work to recognize efforts to accurately depict substance abuse and mental illness in film, television and more.

Welcome to Diva Dish With Creator Josh Berman

Posted By LifetimeLisaR 3:26pm GMT

Drop Dead Diva NewsWelcome to the premiere Diva Dish post — with very special guest and "Drop Dead Diva" Creator and Executive Producer Josh Berman! He's pictured to the left surrounded by some of your favorite "Diva" cast members. With Diva Dish on the "Drop Dead Diva" Blog (and 24/7 on Diva" Facebook and Twitter!) we'll be providing you with news and updates on Season 3, including behind-the-scenes photos, videos and more. Each week leading up to the premiere of Season 3 airing June 19 on Lifetime, Josh Berman will be answering fan questions about the show. Submit yours in the comments below.

First up, let's look at a very popular question asked by one of our Facebook friends, Sadie! Sadie asks Josh: "Are you going to bring on a great male character for Jane to date? Perhaps Tony or someone new?"

Josh Dishes: "Ah! The dating question. Jane's dating life definitely has some ups and downs in Season 3. She's more comfortable with herself and her body, and I think men will be attracted to her new found confidence. Jane is a gorgeous woman and she certainly will attract some new men — but often in unexpected places."

Ooo, we're intrigued! One of our fabulous Tweeters, Carole (aka eclipse70s) asks Josh: "What inspired you to create your great show?"

Josh Dishes: "This is a great question. It was my grandmother. Her name was Debra. She was short, overweight and elderly but she carried herself like a supermodel. She helped raise me and made me believe that I could do anything. I wanted to create a character like my grandmother — someone who I loved, with great self-confidence, but who wasn't a traditional Hollywood beauty. With that in mind, I developed 'Drop Dead Diva' and named our supermodel Deb, in honor of my grandmother."

Your turn to dish: What questions do you have for Josh? Write them below and he just might answer them in next week's Diva Dish!

Kathy Griffin to Guest Star as Kim's Sister

Posted By LifetimeLisaR 6:01pm GMT

Kathy Griffin on Drop Dead DivaWe're gearing up for another day of exciting Season 3 guest star scoop on the "Drop Dead Diva" Blog! The upcoming season is promising to be the funniest yet, with the always hilarious Wendy Williams and Wanda Sykes joining the cast as judges for an episode each. What more could be up creator Josh Berman's sleeves, you ask? On the show, Kate Levering's character Kim is a (super smart, super hot, overall fabulous) force to be reckoned with — so it only makes sense that the woman fit to play her sister on "Drop Dead Diva" is spitfire comedian Kathy Griffin!

Kathy Griffin is joining the cast of "Drop Dead Diva" for an episode in Season 3 as Kim's sis — and someone who does not get along with Jane's assistant Teri, played by Margaret Cho. Comedians Kathy and Margaret go way back and Griffin joked that playing Cho's arch-nemesis for an episode was the "role I was born to play." Margaret Tweeted Wednesday morning: "So excited to have @iamwandasykes and @kathygriffin on ddd this season!" We couldn't agree more!

UPDATE, 05.17.11: Kathy Griffin Tweeted earlier today that she is filming for her role on "Drop Dead Diva"! Actors Jackson Hurst and Kate Levering have also been Tweeting about Kathy's time on set.

Tune in to the all-new episode featuring Kathy Griffin Sunday, August 14 at 9 pm/8c on Lifetime!

Margaret Cho Talks Teri

Posted By LifetimeLisaR 5:58pm GMT

I've had a major girl crush on Margaret Cho since the first time I saw her do stand-up when I was (probably) a little too young to get most of the jokes. On "Drop Dead Diva," we get a weekly dose of the unstoppable comedian as Teri, Jane's super sassy assistant with a heart of gold.

Check out an interview with Margaret where she reveals how she got her role on "Drop Dead Diva," who Teri really is and what it's like working with the show's cast.

The Scoop on Wanda Sykes' Guest Starring Role

Posted By LifetimeLisaR 6:10pm GMT

Wanda Sykes on Drop Dead Diva

We're just days away from the "Drop Dead Diva" marathon on Lifetime this Friday, April 8 starting at 8 pm/9c and now we've got some super exciting show news for you! Entertainment Weekly's resident Diva Mandi Bierly revealed today that the oh-so-hilarious Wanda Sykes will be guest starring as a judge on Episode 6 of the upcoming Season 3!

The "New Adventures of Old Christine" star is set to appear as Judge Yvonne Wright. Sykes as Judge Wright will preside over a case inspired by Mississippi high school student Constance McMillen — a senior who was restricted from attending her prom because she wanted to go with her girlfriend.

"Drop Dead Diva" creator Josh Berman spilled to EW that he had his eye on casting Sykes after seeing her present an award at the 2010 GLAAD Media Awards (where "Diva" was up for an Outstanding Individual Episode award for Season 2's "Queen of Mean"). In the interview, Josh describes Sykes’ character as "acerbic, very funny and clever, and doesn’t take any crap from anyone, as we would expect Wanda to be." The real-life Constance McMillen will even cameo in the episode as the judge’s bailiff.
