Countdown to Season 5: Spotlight on the Angels

Posted By laurareineke 10:00am GMT

As the angel in charge of Deb's disastrous post-death review, Fred (Ben Feldman) was demoted to be her guardian angel after she took up residence in Jane's body. Fred felt an immediate attraction to Deb's best friend Stacy, and the two jumped a lot of hurdles -- including memory loss, jealousy and infidelity -- to try to make their relationship work. Unfortunately, human emotion proved too complicated and heartbreaking for Fred. At the end of Season 3 he ascended back to heaven, where he was relieved of his guardian angel duties.

Sent down as a replacement at the start of Season 4, Luke (Carter MacIntyre) watched over Jane by buying her apartment building -- thus becoming her landlord -- and by becoming an angel investor (hah!) in the firm. His mission was to encourage Deb to become more like Jane, and in doing so let go of her past life. He tried to stop Jane from indulging the Deb parts of her by making sure Grayson didn't figure out Jane's secret. He also courted Kim briefly.

Countdown to Season 5: Spotlight on Kim

Posted By kim_messina 10:00am GMT

Kim Kaswell (Kate Levering) didn't get off on the right foot with Jane. Not only did Kim dislike Jane because of her being overweight, but she was jealous of Jane's brains. And the feeling was mutual. Jane wasn't exactly thrilled when she found out that Kim was seeing Grayson, to say the least. (They even had a pregnancy scare!)

By the time the second season came around, Jane and Kim were full-on rivals at the firm, and Kim even testified against Jane at her disbarment hearing. Luckily, Jane was able to prove herself and as we know, continued to practice law. At the same time, Kim grew closer to Parker personally and professionally. By the end of the season, Kim was fired by her boss Claire Harrison (who also kissed Parker!).

Parker tried to apologize to Kim after spotting her at a coffee shop, but she got back to him the only way she knew how—by kicking his butt in court. Kim was then came back to the firm and was made partner. In Season 4, Kim took Jane on as her secondary partner because with Parker away, the firm was having financial difficulty. When Parker came back, the pair rekindled their relationship and in the finale of Season 4, Kim learns she is pregnant with Parker's baby.

Countdown to Season 5: Spotlight on Parker

Posted By laurareineke 10:00am GMT

A powerful lawyer and a bit of a playboy, Jay Parker founded Harrison & Parker and was the firm's lead partner. His affair with a married woman led to Jane getting shot at the start of the series. Throughout the first season, Parker had an antagonistic back-and-forth with Jane, whose courtroom methods he usually found ridiculous or unorthodox.

Despite their spotty working relationship, Parker stepped up to the plate to defend Jane in her disbarment hearing at the start of Season 2. Later that season Parker and Kim began dating, but their relationship was tested when Parker's former partner Claire Harrison returned to the firm. Claire and Kim butted heads, and Claire fired Kim -- only to have Parker fire her, then try to hire Kim back. Hurt over the way Parker consistently ignored his ex-girlfriends, Kim refused.

In Season 3 it seemed like Parker and Kim were trying things again. But Parker hired his former girlfriend, Elisa, as a temp, and it wasn't long before Kim figured out that Elisa's son was actually Parker's son, too. When Parker found out, he flew into a rage over the fact that he was kept in the dark for so long. He quit his job to chase after Elisa, giving Kim his share of the firm. Season 4 saw Parker return to the firm empty-handed. He lawyered up to try to gain visitation rights for his son, going up against Elisa in court. Parker also struggled with the firm's financial debt, and with Grayson's help courted a new investor, Gina. When the firm was accused of laundering money, Kim discovered Parker played a larger role in the firm's troubles than he wanted to admit. In the Season 4 finale, Kim confessed to Parker that she was pregnant with his child.

Countdown to Season 5: Spotlight on Teri

Posted By kim_messina 10:00am GMT

Known for quirky behavior and outrageous outfits, Jane's assistant Teri Lee (Margaret Cho) has been there for her since Day One, and never let's Jane out of her sight. No really, she even installed a GPS on Jane's phone, which came in handy when Jane fled to Italy.

Never one to hold back, Teri is the firm's gossip and has no problem speaking her mind. She is also an anspiring musician (and has a musical persona—Lady Bodacious!) and performed at the opening of Stacy's pakery in Season 4, Episode 4.

Countdown to Season 5: Spotlight on Stacy

Posted By laurareineke 10:00am GMT

Aspiring model Stacy (April Bowlby) was on the phone with her best friend Deb when Deb was involved in a fatal car accident. When Deb came back to Earth as Jane, Stacy was the first person she ran to for help -- and one of the only people to know her secret.

Aside from being bubbly, friendly, and optimistic, Stacy quickly proved herself to be an invaluable asset to the firm, often supplying quirky theories and doing independent research that helped Jane land wins in the courtroom. Stacy's sunny demeanor and model looks also drew Fred's attention, and he spent Season 1 pursuing her. But their first kiss was a step too far for Fred: Breaking heaven's rules wiped all Stacy's memories of him.

But his return in Season 2 meant a return to their courtship, and eventually Stacy fell for him. Their relationship progressed slowly but hopefully until Stacy booked a commercial that required her to kiss hot model co-stars, which hurt Fred's pride. In Season 3, Stacy finally landed a starring role on a TV show. She chose to keep her relationship with Fred a secret from the press -- for "publicity purposes," she said -- but her attraction to her co-star, Brian, was hard to deny. So hard to deny that the two shared a passionate kiss.

Fred confronted Stacy about the kiss and left in anger. Stacy, convinced Jane was the one who told Fred of her misdeed, pushes her best friend away, distraught at Jane's lack of loyalty. Diva behavior became more and more of Stacy's specialty as her newfound popularity went to her head. But when Brian stole a commercial deal out of from under her, then slept with her assistant, Stacy flipped out and punched him, then got arrested for assault. Grayson stepped in to help her clear the charges, and the two kissed, a move that both quickly admitted was a mistake -- but not before Jane saw and reported back to Fred, who immediately cancelled plans to reconcile with Stacy. Stacy found herself the victim of memory-wiping again in Season 4, after Fred confessed to all the secrets of his origins that he'd been hiding since they met.

With Fred officially gone and her acting career at a standstill, Stacy turned to baking. She accidentally invented a tasty new dessert called the pake after crossing a recipe for pie with a recipe for cake, and the treat soared in popularity. A new friend, Nikki, convinced Stacy to go into business with her on a new "pakery." Stacy agreed despite Jane's warnings that Nikki was untrustworthy, but ended up regretting her decision when Nikki turned out to be a con artist and ran off with Stacy's investment money. Stacy's friends convinced her not to abandon the pakery idea, but things came to a halt again when she got into hot water with a man who sued her, claiming that she stole the pake recipe from him. Stacy helped her legal defense win in the courtroom and successfully landed the patent for pakes.

Countdown to Season 5: Spotlight on Owen

Posted By kim_messina 10:00am GMT

We first met Judge Owen French (Lex Medlin) while he was presiding over a case in Season 3 that Jane was working on. The two quickly developed a more-than-friends relationship and by the end of Season 3, Owen asked Jane to move with him to New Zealand. After much deliberation, the two did not move across the world, but went on an extended vacation to Italy instead.

Owen proposed to Jane in the beginning of Season 4, but quickly slipped out of town, saying that he was going to visit a friend who was in the hospital. Teri eventually found out that Owen was lying and was having second thoughts about getting married, since he was married before and had seen too many marriages fail. He also explained that he was once in a coma after a heart attack and he didn't want to hurt Jane by dying. Jane told him she'd stick with him through thick and thin, and Jane and Owen's wedding was set for the Season 4 finale. But as we all know, just minutes before walking down aisle, Owen walked in on Jane and Grayson kissing, had a heart attack and now Jane's spirit inhabits his body.

Countdown to Season 5: Spotlight on Grayson

Posted By laurareineke 10:00am GMT

An affable, hardworking young lawyer, Grayson Kent (Jackson Hurst) accepted a position at Harrison & Parker after the death of his beloved fiancee, Deb. Unbeknownst to him, Deb was working right alongside him...albeit in the body of another lawyer, Jane. Grayson and Deb-as-Jane became fast friends as Grayson started taking on cases and getting more comfortable at the firm. But while Jane tried to work up the courage to confess to Grayson her true identity, Grayson started to work through his grief and decided to embark on a new relationship with Jane's professional rival Kim. Grayson's still-palpable grief over Deb's death made him a pretty terrible boyfriend, though, so Kim decided to call it quits. A pregnancy scare nearly forced the two back together, but Grayson ended the season the way he started it: Single, grieving, and still in the dark regarding Jane's secret.

When Jane faced the possibility of disbarment at the start of Season 2, Grayson convinced Parker to represent her. Jane and Grayson continued to work cases together. During a murder trial, they met Vanessa, a whip-smart lawyer for the opposition. A few awkward moments between Vanessa and Grayson weren't enough to outweigh their obvious chemistry, and the pair started to date. Things progressed quickly until, on the brink of a breakup, Grayson decided to fully commit to Vanessa and proposed. First on the to-do list: A dinner with Jane, where he asked her to be his best man at the wedding. But when lovesick Jane stormed out of the restaurant, Grayson chased after her, only to be hit by a van in the middle of the street. Lying in a puddle of blood, he smiled up at Jane and said, "Deb," before closing his eyes.

But if Grayson actually did experience a revelation about Jane's identity, he forgot it when the accident sent him into a brief coma. Released from the hospital, Grayson was determined not to let more time slip away from him; he and Vanessa began to plan in earnest for their nuptials. But even Jane's support couldn't stabilize their relationship. Vanessa left Grayson at the altar. Through the end of Season 3 and into Season 4, Grayson's friendship with Jane deepend, and he dabbled more in dating outside the office. But things got more complicated when he successfully defended Stacy after she was arrested for assault. She kissed him, and even though both knew it was a mistake, Jane still saw it happen.

In the Season 4 finale, Jane was poised to marry her fiance, a judge named Owen. In a heartfelt conversation before the ceremony, Grayson admitted that he was able to move on from Deb because he found Jane, and the two (finally!) kissed. The shock of seeing his bride-to-be in the arms of another man gave Owen a heart attack -- and sent the real Jane's previously heaven-bound soul into his body.

Countdown to Season 5: Spotlight on Jane

Posted By kim_messina 10:00am GMT

Jane Bingum (Brooke Elliott) is a brilliant, thoughtful but shy attorney, with the spirit of a vapid, outgoing model wannabe (Deb Dobkins) inside, brought together through a heavenly mix-up. Engaged to Grayson, Deb's life was tragically cut short when she died in a car accident, only to come back as plus-size lawyer, Jane. With guardian angel Fred by her side, Jane has to learn how to navigate life...as someone else.

In the first season finale, just as Jane thought Grayson was falling for her as Jane, not Deb, we learned that Jane was secretly was married to Ethan. In the second season it was revealed that Jane only married Ethan so he could get insurance for cancer treatments, but he left a month after they were married. They eventually got divorced and Jane went back to dating fellow lawyer, Tony. Tony asked Jane to move to D.C. with him, but she said that she belongs at her current firm with Stacy and Grayson.

By the end of the third season, Jane still hadn't confessed to Grayson her true identity (And Grayson even had partial memory loss because he got run over by a van!), and started dating Judge Owen French, who she eventually got engaged to. And as luck would have it, at the same time, Grayson finally realized that Jane was Deb. Also in the fourth season, it was revealed that the spirit of the real Jane was in heaven watching in disgust as Deb used her body and life, and decided that it's time to regain her old life. Everything came to a head in the Season 4 finale when Grayson confessed to Jane that he loves her, kissed her...only to have Owen walk in on them. Owen had a heart attack and the real spirit of Jane entered his body.
