Frank is being deployed in three days, and though Denise urges him to see Jeremy before he leaves, an inadvertent meeting with Amanda spurs him to make the trip. There, Frank confronts his son about hitting Denise, but soon realizes that the abuse stems from his absence as a father in Jeremy's life. Roland confesses to Joan about his one night stand with Vanessa after she discovers the hotel key in his pocket, leading him to ask for a trial separation. Meanwhile, a stressed Pamela has a colorful spat over a parking space with Major Ned Case, and the argument inspires him to hire her as the lively on-air host for the post's radio station. General Grayson (Robert Forster) and his wife, Victoria (Barbara Eden), arrive at Fort Marshall for a routine post inspection, inciting some to believe that they're checking to see if Michael is a suitable replacement for General Baker. Alarmed at her husband losing his position as Post Commander, Lenore continues to sabotage Claudia Joy's reputation. This time, she spreads a nasty rumor around that Claudia Joy had an affair with her professor at Harvard, speculating that Michael is not Amanda's real father. Lenore also unabashedly snoops through Grayson's briefcase when Victoria is away, looking for insider information that would help her husband. When she discovers a "Project Scorpion" folder requesting Michael's support, Lenore mentions her discovery to General Grayson, alarming him with her knowledge of top-secret information. As a result, Lenore is taken away to be interrogated for breaching national security and Victoria reveals to Claudia Joy that she planted the folder to set Lenore up, and that Michael was going to be promoted to Post Commander full term.

Dirty Laundry Controversy erupts on the base when Claudia Joy discovers that her old friend, Hannah White (Ann Cusack), is returning to the post not only for a ceremony that's honoring her late husband, Derrick, but also to reveal that she's going to testify before Congress to uncover the truth about his death in Afghanistan. The confrontation leaves Claudia Joy in the middle, between Michael's urging to cut ties with Hannah in order to protect the Army's image, and helping her best friend find out if Derrick died as the result of friendly fire. Hannah's stance creates a rift between the Army wives, forcing the women to choose sides over the issue. Meanwhile, Roxy stresses over her marriage when her sex life with Trevor comes to a complete halt, leading the other women to rethink their own sex lives. Denise realizes that Frank makes the first move in the bedroom, and both Pamela and Roxy give her a wardrobe/hair makeover to give her more confidence. Joan's enthusiasm over finding Roland's interview in the National Dispatch magazine fuels his guilt about his affair, but he decides to keep the incident a secret. Claudia Joy approaches Hannah in hopes to mend their friendship, but when she learns that Claudia Joy still stands by Michael, Hannah decides to leave the post and the life she knew there forever.

Joan returns home, surprising Roland with her early arrival and her determination to put their marriage before her career. Frank is upset when Denise is delayed at the hospital and fails to show up at Major Weatherford's "Hail & Farewell. At the party, Claudia Joy overhears a heated, domestic dispute between Lenore Baker and her husband moments before Baker collapses from an aneurysm. As a result, Michael temporarily assumes the top ranking position at Ft. Marshall. At the hospital, Denise hears Marilyn spreading vicious rumors about Claudia Joy. Michael's new position gives him the opportunity to promote Joan to XO; she turns to Roland for advice, and together they accept her new position. Chase surprises Pamela with a 36 hour visit, and the reunion brings the two closer together. Roxy, feeling like she still doesn't know her husband very well, reaches out to Trevor to learn more about him. Angry at his wife, Frank visits the hospital to confront Denise, but instead watches her stabilize a patient, Sgt Greer. He realizes that Denise has a true nursing talent, and he apologizes for his behavior. After Denise warns her about Lenore, Claudia Joy brings everyone together to tell them the truth: while studying for law school, she accidentally killed a fellow student in a car accident and dropped out of school.

With Jeremy gone, Amanda finds herself continuing to rebel against her parents, especially after Michael informs her about a family trip to Montana. Instead, she reaches out to Denise for comfort and insists on staying home during the vacation. Denise decides to pursue nursing at the post hospital, but finds herself out of place after 18 years off the job. The changes overwhelm Denise and she walks out before the class ends. An unexpected reunion with a friend from her past, Scott, brings up old feelings for Pamela, who is still coping with Chases? deployment. Pamela finds herself enjoying the attention and wondering what her life would be like if she married Scott instead of Chase. Roland finds himself in bed with Vanessa Kelsing, an attractive reporter who is in Charleston for 48 hours to interview him about his new book. Roxy befriends Delores, a recently widowed single mother, who cannot accept that she needs to leave the post as a result of her husband's death. Roxy seeks Claudia Joy's counsel and with their support and guidance, Delores finds the strength to face her grief. Together with Roxy and her friends, Delores successfully packs up her house and moves off the post. The experience gives Denise the courage to give the nursing program another try.

After a childhood of broken promises, Roxy has a hard time trusting that her mother, Marda, who unexpectantly visited in 107, is sober. Trying to make up for her past behavior, Marda enlists Pamela to help her plan a surprise birthday party for Roxy. The night before the party, Trevor takes Roxy out to dinner while Marda watches the kids. When they return home, the house is a mess, the kids are hopped up on sugar and Marda is nowhere to be found. Making good on a promise he made to a dying soldier, Frank visits the boy's father and gives him a message. Unable to deal with his own son's truth, Frank continues to shut Jeremy out of his life. In his darkest hours, Jeremy seeks comfort from Amanda. Michael and Claudia Joy try to diffuse the romance between the teens and tell Amanda about Jeremy's abusive behavior. Incredulous, Amanda confronts Jeremy and is shocked to learn her parents were telling the truth. Instead of pulling them apart, Jeremy's secret brings them closer together. The night before Jeremy leaves for boot camp, they lose their virginity to each other. Denise is distraught about losing her son to the army. Typically, Denise would turn to her best friend, Claudia Joy, for comfort, but their friendship is strained when Denise learned The Holden's didn't want their daughter dating her son.

Frank gets a hero's welcome when he returns home to the post. With newfound compassion, Frank willingly accepts Jeremy's decision to not attend West Point. Holding to the promise he made to Michael, Jeremy reluctantly tells his father his darkest secret. Frank is enraged and without consulting Denise he throws Jeremy out of the house. A jealous Emmalin has secretly been tracking her sister, Amanda's, budding romance with Jeremy. Eager to stir the pot, she tells her mother about the romance. Claudia Joy and Michael, both aware of Jeremy's history as an abuser, desperately want to protect their daughter. When Jeremy comes to the Holdens seeking comfort from Amanda, Michael tells him he isn't welcome. While playing with the boys, Trevor falls over one of their toys and tears a ligament in his knee. Trevor's imminent deployment is on hold for at least six months while he rehabilitates his leg. Roxy's hidden elation comes to a grinding halt when her mother, Marda, unexpectedly visits. Charmed by his new mother-in-law, Trevor does not know the depths of Roxy's conflict with her inappropriate, alcoholic mother. Meanwhile, with Joan away, Roland is troubled and keeps to himself, working overtime to avoid the other wives. Marilyn reveals to Roxy that her husband has discovered her affair and by mistake, accuses Pamela of breaking the code.

In response to the crisis in the Sherwood household, the walls around Joan and Roland's marriage start to crumble. Joan considers retiring from the Army and undergoing PTSD therapy for not reporting Belgrad's emotional condition in 103. Claudia Joy and Michael let Denise and Jeremy know that Frank is alive and on his way home. While Pamela and Roxy help prepare for the Independence Day celebration on the post, Claudia Joy discovers that as a result of Michael refusing to give Sgt. Belgrad a military funeral, his widow and children are being denied their benefits. At the Hump bar, Roxy spies Marilyn with another man and eagerly tells Pamela. Pamela sternly advises Roxy not to share this gossip with Trevor for there is a code among the women, they do not share any information that could ultimately put their husbands lives in jeopardy. During the Independence Day celebration, Claudia Joy makes a powerful speech about how the army, including their wives and families, must support one another, and never leave one behind. Michael is moved and, motivated by his wife's conviction, decides to reverse his early decision and Belgrad is given a proper Army burial. Joan leaves for PTSD rehabilitation. Thinking she has just ?lost? Chase in the crowd, Pamela is saddened when she realizes her husband is gone. He has been deployed by Delta Force.

One of Our Own Jeremy is at the movies with Emmalin and Amanda, on whom he is developing a crush, when he hears about his father's downed helicopter. In shock, Denise desperately wants to go to Frank and only Claudia Joy can reason with her that it's best to stay home. Denise's trauma strains her relationship with Jeremy even more. Meanwhile, Roxy realizes that her children are happy to have Trevor as their new father, and finally signs the adoption papers. Claudia Joy, seaking Roland's advice about Denise's current emotional state, is an unintentional victim of Sgt. Peter Belgrad's mental collapse. Belgrad takes Roland and Claudia Joy hostage at the hospital, and demands to speak to Joan. Delta Force is ordered to the site, as news crews and families gather outside. Joan reluctantly tells Michael about the events in Afghanistan that have lead to Belgrad's breakdown. Roland is shocked to learn from Peter about his wife's actions in Afghanistan. Roland is close to disarming Peter when a bullet from Chase's rifle takes his life. As Claudia Joy and Roland exit the hospital, Joan knows from the look on her husband's face that he knows her darkest secret. Relieved that her friend is safe, Denise returns home and waits for news about Frank.
The Art of Separation

While practicing yoga, Claudia Joy and Michael discover that their daughter, Amanda, has been arrested for advocating peace in a war protest. Frank calls Denise, but she does not tell him that Jeremy isn't going to West Point. Denise finds the courage to tell Jeremy that he's never to touch her again or she?ll send him to jail. Michael challenges Jeremy to tell his father the truth about the abuse. Joan is called to check on Sergeant Belgrad (Jason Wiles), a soldier from her battalion who's suffering from PTSD. On his hospital psychology rounds, Roland hears about a soldier who has recurring nightmares about his female C.O. and Roland realizes he is referring to Joan. Pamela and Chase rekindle their romance and she discovers he never told the kids the truth about the twins. Roxy and Trevor discuss his will, and though she's afraid to think about his death, he reassures her that his love for their family will keep him alive. Jesse, TJ's father, shows up at the Hump Bar and instead of signing the adoption papers, he wants to reconcile with Roxy. Without Roxy's knowledge, Trevor confronts Jesse and gets him to sign the papers. The women are gathered at Claudia Joy's, when Michael comes home to report that a helicopter, carrying nine soldiers from Fort Marshall, including Frank, has crashed in Iraq. No one knows if he's one of the dead or one of the missing.

At the hospital, Pamela learns that the Harpers, the couple who paid her to be a surrogate, are out of town and cannot pick up the twins. In order to protect her secret, Claudia Joy offers to house the twins for the next 2 days. Trevor surprises Roxy with the news that he wants to officially adopt her children, a decision motivated by his upcoming deployment to Iraq. With his father on a tour of duty, Jeremy refuses to attend West Point in the fall and continues to physically abuse his mother, Denise. Upon learning that Denise has fallen prey to her adolescent son's outbursts, Roxy takes her new friend to the gym and gives Denise her first boxing lesson. Pamela, disappointed by Chase's out of control spending, feels alone in her marriage and questions her decision to be a surrogate. Roland attempts to reach out to Joan with a romantic dinner, but Joan, who has begun to drink heavily, is uncomfortable with being intimate and accuses Roland of cheating while she was away. When Pamela finally says goodbye to the twins, Chase is there to console her.
