Abby Lee Miller

Founder, Director, and Chief Choreographer of the Abby Lee Dance Company in Pittsburgh, Abby’s love for dance came from her mother, Maryen Lorrian Miller, who is a 65 year member of Dance Masters of America. Maryen owned seven dance studios in Miami, Florida, prior to marrying George L. Miller of Pittsburgh and giving birth to Abigale Lee. Maryen taught classes all over Pittsburgh before opening her main studio in the suburb of Penn Hills. Abby took classes throughout her formative years at her mother’s studio. After traveling with her to several national dance conventions, she was inspired and captivated by the newest "dance craze" competitions and at just 14 years-old, she started the Abby Lee Dance Company. She explains that in her early dance years she "…learned from some of the most amazing originals, pioneers in the dance world."

In 1992, Abby built her own state-of-the-art studio and estimates she has taught more than 3,000 students throughout her career. Now known for her incredible dedication, discipline and passion, Abby is one of the most sought-after dance teachers in the country, as she has turned out numerous professional dancers. Former students include Mark Myars, who is now the Dance Supervisor for the casts of "Wicked" in Japan, Australia, and Germany and Asmeret Ghebremichael who was part of the critically acclaimed cast featured on Broadway in "Book of Mormon." Abby has also had dancers in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular for over 26 years and continues to have dancers working professionally all over the world, including 17 contracts to Tokyo Disneyland.

Since the launch of Lifetime’s hit series "Dance Moms" in summer 2011, Abby has become a household name and an international celebrity in her own right. Centered on her role as dance instructor, the show uniquely captures the dynamic interplay between Abby, the students and parents as she commits herself to bring out the best in her competition team and bring home national titles. On September 10, "Dance Moms" will finish its third season, and the series continues to captivate audiences averaging millions of viewers each week, with the distinction of being Lifetime's youngest skewing series.

Additionally Abby has become a world-renowned dance persona, making guest appearances at prestigious dance events, including the Capezio 125th Anniversary Awards and in October 2012 she was featured on the cover of Dance Teacher Magazine. Earlier in 2012, Abby was nominated for a Logo "NewNowNext" award and this year "Dance Moms" was nominated for a second time for a Fan Favorite Teen Choice Award for Best Candid Reality Show, plus Abby herself was nominated for Choice Female TV Reality Star. Last year, Abby also made her acting debut in a guest appearance on Lifetime’s critically acclaimed hit series "Drop Dead Diva" and this year she made a guest appearance on the summer premiere of Lifetime's uplifting dour-series, "Double Divas."
