Celebrity Misfit: Mariah Carey’s Jacket Comes Up Short

Posted by Kim M. 11/21/09 1:06am GMT

Singer (and now, legitimate actress) Mariah Carey helped turn on the holiday lights at a shopping center in London on November 19, but her choice of outfit may get her a lump of coal in her stocking come December.

Oh, Mariah, your acting career is back on track with your highly praised role in the film “Precious.” But sadly, there are only bad reviews for your mini sweater. And, is that a spandex catsuit? Mimi, let’s leave that look for Amber Rose.

What do you think of Mimi's mini jacket?

Two Ways to Wear: Jewel Tone Halter Gowns

Posted by Kim M. 11/20/09 11:43pm GMT

There is nothing worse than showing up a at party to see another guest wearing your dress. And if you have ever attended a formal affair, where floor grazing styles are "de rigueur" ("requested"), you know the odds are against you making a completely unique fashion statement at the event (unless you are Rihanna).

At the recent Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences Governors Awards Gala on November 16, actresses Abbie Cornish (in Christian Dior) and Amy Smart both donned similar halter styles gowns in jewel tone shades of amethyst and jade, but each stood out in their look.

This Week's Fab Five

Posted by kgranero 11/20/09 7:31pm GMT

This week was all about...classic gowns and killer cocktail dresses. And the winners are...

Dakota Fanning working it in a strapless Valentino dress at “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” Premiere in Los Angeles. The saga newbie managed to upstage, well everyone, in this mature, yet youthful number. Sassy!

Kate Beckinsale in a teal-colored Andrew Gn gown worn to the MOCA 30th Anniversary Gala. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that this is the best I've seen Kate look, and she looks great 99% of the time.

Heidi Klum rocking a geometrical body-hugger at the 2009 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show After Party. Just weeks after giving birth to yet another child, Heidi's bod managed to rise to the occasion and then some.

Ashley Greene
in Prabal Gurung at “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” Premiere in Los Angeles. While this gown may be simple, its shape and color are nothing short of sensational. Ashley's certainly been having a great week.

Eva Mendes strutting it in a black and tan Miu Miu dress at the MOCA 30th Anniversary Gala. The embellishments along the bodice of this otherwise conservative sheath add an edgy, yet still glamorous, touch.

Which star really killed it on the red carpet this week?

Janet Mayer/Splash News

Playing with polish is actually part of my job description (crazy, but true!), but if you're in an office where experimenting with makeup during work hours is "frowned upon," O.P.I offers a solution that's just as fun...

"Try On This Color" is a brilliant new tool that allows you to paint your (virtual) nails with over 300+ shades, as well as change your nail length and skin tone to reflect your individuality. It's a great way to preview shades before purchase, and is far less telling than the scent of an open nail polish pot!

Dare to Wear: Taylor Momsen

Posted by kgranero 11/20/09 11:41am GMT

Dear Taylor Momsen,
I'm sorry to be the one to break this to you, but your CW show is "Gossip Girl," not "The Vampire Diaries."
Whoo! It felt good getting that off my chest.

The actress, whose parents are clearly nothing like mine were growing up (I'm still not allowed to have boobs or any other sign of womanhood in their presence), apparently took last night's "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" screening in New York a little too seriously.

Wearing a lacy, black Dolce & Gabbana number and "Edward-when-he-hasn't-eaten-in-days" makeup, perhaps the only thing more frightening than Taylor's getup was co-star Leighton Meester's two days prior. Is this some kind of corpsy conspiracy?!

Would you dare to wear this look?

Episode 14: Chris March Predicts

Posted by chrismarch 11/20/09 5:58am GMT

Logan Neiztel and his silver pants on season six of project runwayFor my final (finale) blog, I am going to make some predictions about the future of “Project Runway” and the Season 6 participants. (Editor's Note: Chris had not seen the complete finale when he wrote this post.)

I predict that:

• Logan will market a line of super-tight silver pants that have magical powers over women and gay men, and end up ruling the world.

Nina Garcia will quit Marie Claire and become the editor of her own magazine called Ugly Green Dress, since she was obsessed with them this season.

Michael Kors will become the new spokesperson for Florida Orange Juice.

• Season 6 will inspire the new Dr. Seuss movie, “Malvin Lays an Egg.”

• Irina wins the finale of Season 6 of “Project Runway,” only to discover no one in the fashion world wants to work with her. (Editor's note: Good call Chris about who won!)

• Althea will be named “Woman of the Year” by the Council of American Sheepherders.

• Nicolas, “the feather prince,” will make cheap, ugly-looking crow Halloween costumes for Heidi and Seal.

• Carol Hannah will become rich when she markets her smile as an artificial sweetener.

• Althea will knit covers for the North and South Poles, ending global warming and saving the planet. Until ... Christopher Straub crying on season six of project runway

• Christopher cries so much in the next two years, he causes the flood that ends the world in 2012 in the movie “2012.”

• The judges will be so unimpressed with Irina, Carol Hannah and Althea’s finale collections, they will name Gordana as the winner.

• Epperson, Logan and Carol Hannah will open a studio together.

• Qristyl will start a new line of clothing for skinny girls called “Minus Sexy.”

Tim Gunn will discover he is actually Heidi’s real father, after remembering “experimenting” once as a youth on vacation in Germany.

• Season 7 will start in January 2010, and everyone will be happy the show is back in New York City.

• Suzy Menkes will feature “Something About Mary” hair at the Season 6 finale. (Editor's note: Chris cheated on that so-called prediction because he'd seen her hair from the last episode of the show!) Irina Shabayeva on season six of project runway in the finale

• Bob Mackie will hire Shirin to be the designer of his new line, “Tacky Mackie.”

• Louise Black will win an Academy Award for best costumes in 2025 for a remake of the movie “Chicago,” starring Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift.

• Irina will be sued by Jillian Lewis from Season 4 for copying her collection, and will end up on the streets begging for beauty products.

• Heidi and Seal will have 26 more children and get their own reality show on TLC.

• Chris March’s book “I HEART CHRIS MARCH” (available now at www.chrismarchdesign.com) will become a New York Times best seller!

• Gay marriage will become legal in the United States, and Tim Gunn and Michael Kors ... No — even I can’t go there.

• Lifetime will produce a “Project Runway All-Stars Challenge 2010” and Chris March will finally win. Thanks for reading!

See ya soon,

Chris

Episode 14: The Final

The judges on the finale of season six of project runway

At the moment of this posting I, like the rest of you, do not know who this year’s winner of “Project Runway” Season 6 finale is. In order to preserve the identity of this season’s winner, we bloggers are capturing our impressions, having seen all three collections, but without having seen Heidi make her final pronouncement. However, I must say, no matter what the judges decide, I certainly have a favorite!

. . . And that would have to be Dame Suzy Menkes! What an incredible coup for “Project Runway” to have the head reporter and fashion editor of the International Herald Tribune judging the final episode of the show! Her participation is not only a first, but a significant indication of the influence that “Project Runway” has had on the fashion world. Although we’ve yet to see any “Project Runway” alumnus or alumna covered by style.com or Vogue magazine, if the preeminent voice of fashion journalism shows up to judge this little TV show, it suggests that the work being done here has truly begun to achieve some important recognition.

Given this circumstance, Michael Kors, Nina Garcia and Heidi Klum, in my opinion, would have to be out of their minds if they didn’t award the prize money, fashion spread and Parisian vacation to Irina Shabayeva! This show began as a forum through which we might attempt to identify the next great voices in American fashion design. With this intention in mind, it is hard to believe that anyone in the finale this season even comes close to Irina’s qualifications for this distinction. To begin with, she has a uniquely American story. As an immigrant, she is a living example of what we used to believe was possible in America through focused determination and hard work. These days, even though it seems that “hard work” still requires the added push of national television exposure, Irina stands out as someone who has learned that she must make her own fortune in “the land of opportunity.”

Irina Shabayeva and Tim Gunn on the finale of season six of project runway

That being said, this is exactly what she delivers to Bryant Park. Unlike the other two designers, Irina explains her point of view at the beginning of her collection. It’s a small distinction that frequently goes unnoticed on “Project Runway.” So often in the finale episodes, the designers come out on the runway, thank their families, talk about the hard work that went into the collection, and then express their hopes that the audience and the judges will like it. Irina, conversely, talks about her point of view. To help us out, she allows the viewers to accompany her in her particular fashion journey, by explaining what she was thinking about and how she imagines the clothes functioning in our lives.

And the best part of it all is that it works. Unlike the other collections, Irina is able to identify one particular central theme, and then present several consecutive manifestations of that theme in evolving variation. We saw her particular brand of “urban protection” played out in numerous ways. There were subtle “Roman legionnaire” references suggested by the felt cloches on the models. There were enormous blanket sweaters designed to luxuriously enfold the wearer and keep any New Yorker warm in the most chilling wind. Yet these sweaters, and all of her outerwear, are simple enough to be the only garments one must discard upon entering a climate-controlled environment. There were enormous bags with chunky metal chains (see photo below) suitable to hold everything a woman might need, in order to be gone from home all day without having the luxury of leaving things in the trunk of a car. And finally, her treatment of the fabrics in her collection evoked the shiny, geometric exoskeletons of insects, but also the shapes of medieval armor. All of these were different approaches to the idea of “protection,” but they were strongly linked through the interlocking use of material, color and construction details.

Irina Shabayeva's design on the finale of season six of project runway

Finally, Irina deserves to win because her work is current. If you recall, our finalist designers were designing and constructing these clothes in the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2008. Anticipating that these were clothes that would have ideally hit stores right now, in the fall of 2009, Irina somehow managed to capture the severity and gravity of these present times without plunging into a maudlin, Gothic caricature of doom. Through design, she was able to postulate what people might want to buy, right now, given our insatiable thirst for luxury, and the hard financial times that make exhibiting it very unpopular. This, in my opinion, is perhaps the best answer to Nina’s critique of her decision to use an all-black color scheme. A monochromatic color story deflects attention and has got to be the most emphatic endorsement of the idea that “bling is dead.”

So congratulations, Irina! You have done fine work, regardless of whether or not you win the prize. [Editor’s note: Good call, Andrae … Irina won!] There is great satisfaction in knowing that you have set an aesthetic goal for yourself and reached it, and you certainly have. Indeed, if you don’t win (and I think you do), remember that awards are frequently an indication of the fact that you’ve been doing the right thing for a very long time. Keep up the good work!
