Addressing Global Violence Against Women on Capitol Hill

by Nbyrne Fri., Mar. 9, 2012 ,6:41 am EST

In honor of International Women’s Day, Women Thrive Worldwide held the fourth annual event on Capitol Hill to discuss how to reduce gender-based violence around the world.

Addressing startling statistics such as “One out of every three women worldwide will experience violence in her lifetime with rates teaching 70 percent in some countries,” the event was titled “From One in Three to None in Three.”

Co-hosted by a bipartisan Congressional Host Committee led by Senators John Kerry and Lisa Murkowski and Representatives Ted Poe and Jan Schakowsky, the event featured a variety of distinguished guest speakers including actor and activist Maria Bello and anti-female genital mutilation activist Edna Adan Ismail of Somaliland who was last year named one of Newsweek’s 150 Women Who Shake the World.

Women Thrive Worldwide works in Washington, D.C. advocating with the U.S. government to make women’s concerns a priority in U.S. foreign policy and international assistance.

Watch the panel discussion, moderated by Ritu Sharma, Co-Founder and President of Women Thrive Worldwide.
