We caught up with Jordin Sparks and Tatyana Ali, stars of the all-new Lifetime holiday movie, “Dear Secret Santa.” Read all about their holiday traditions in this exclusive Q&A and watch them in the world premiere of “Dear Secret Santa” on November 30 at 8.7c.
What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Jordin Sparks: When I was little we used to go throughout my Nana & Papas neighborhood and sing carols in the back of their convertible with the top down. Not door to door but blasting the music and singing loud for all to hear!
Tatyana Ali: My mom still gets my sisters and me matching pajamas, which was completely embarrassing when I was little. But now, if a year went by and she didn’t get us new PJs, we’d all be really upset. My sister recently got married, and her husband gets matching PJs as well.
The holidays aren't complete without...
TA: A tree!
JS: My mom’s sweet potato casserole!
What's your favorite holiday song?
TA: "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause" by The Jackson 5 and "The Christmas Song" by Nat King Cole
JS: I love "The Christmas Song" and all of Mariah Carey's Christmas music.
What holiday dish does your family make every year?
JS: My Nana makes a honey baked ham and amazing soup. My mom makes turkey legs and collard greens and of course we have an amazing selection of sweets. Caramel corn, fudge, almond roca, wedding cake cookies, pies…mmmm!
TA: My dad is from Trinidad, so every year for breakfast my dad makes salt fish and bakes (kind of like a biscuit), with tomatoes and perfectly ripe avocados. It’s my favorite.
What's your fondest childhood holiday memory?
JS: Putting the angel on the top of the tree. I felt extra special getting to put her up there.
TA: I loved Christmas in New York...there’s just nothing like it. L.A. has become my home, but lights on palm trees still seem a bit odd to me.
Are you on the naughty or nice list this year?
JS: Won't everyone say the nice list? ;)
TA: Nice, I hope!
What is the worst gift you've ever given/received?
JS: During a white elephant gift exchange I got stove top burners. No stove…just the burners. Hahaha!
TA: When I moved into my own place my parents got me kitchen utensils for Christmas. It was a great gift in retrospect, very useful, and they were actually quite nice, but at the time it was a tiny bit lackluster.
What is your holiday wish this year?
JS: I just want everyone to have a good time together and cherish it.
TA: That every wish of the people I love comes true.
