Tia and Tamera Mowry have joined forces to executive-produce and star in Lifetime's original romantic comedy "Double Wedding." Nobody does both twin rivalry and sisterly love like Tia and Tamera. For over 15 years the Mowry sisters have been featured on popular TV shows, including the beloved series that paved their path to fame, “Sister, Sister.” Since then, the twins have launched successful acting careers separately, but have always been by each other’s side off-screen. The identical duo revealed what it was like to part professionally, how a famous twin finds love and what it takes to avoid temptations as a child star. Just like the sisters, each interview is equally unique and entertaining. Read what Tamera had to say, and then get the scoop from Tia!

In “Double Wedding,” you play an easygoing, creative baker. How true to life is that? Can you whip up a cake in a matter of minutes?

Yes, that is so me. That is me in a nutshell. Easygoing, creative, and yes, I am a baker. I bake cupcakes, cakes, cookies, and all from scratch, mind you. I make my own icing. I just recently made banana–peanut butter cupcakes and I made peanut butter icing. It was amazing, and it was so easy!

How do you have time for that?!

I love to cook for my boyfriend and for my friends, so every other weekend I usually have people over. We have wine, and I’m a great griller as well. I make my own barbecue sauce.
We wanted the movie to be loosely based on our lives, and that is it. Even the love life. My boyfriend is a news reporter in real life, and Tate is an engineer [in the movie], and you’d never think he would be with a baker, and that’s why we wanted those two to potentially be together. You would automatically think an engineer and a lawyer would make the great couple, and that’s the gist of the story. Love can be right under your nose.

Deanna and Danielle are in a race to find their man. Your character, Danielle, meets guys everywhere she goes, but Deanna uses an online dating site. Do you think there is still a stigma with online dating, or do you think single ladies should be signing up?

I can only speak for myself, but my sister and I have this motto: Do you. Do you, be you. You know, we love “You’ve Got Mail,” and “Sleepless in Seattle,” so that was kind of our inspiration for the movie. I have a friend who met her husband on a dating site, and they’re perfect for each other, but because I’m a tad superstitious, I don’t like forcing an issue. I kind of just like letting it happen, and I think signing up online is looking for love. For me, I want love to find me. Organic — that’s how I believe love should be, but everyone is different.

What did you love most about making “Double Wedding”?

I loved just working with my sister. Anything with my sister, and I knew it was going to be great, and I knew it wasn’t going to be work.

Your character, Danielle, as we know, is a talented baker, but she’s nervous about starting her own business and having the confidence to put her talent out into the world. In real life, you and Tia are successful businesswomen as well as actors. What advice can you give women who are looking to be entrepreneurs but may be hesitant?

Just do it. To be honest with you, a lot of Danielle is who I am. With relationships I was that way, and with being a producer. The reason why Tia and I are producers is because at first we were afraid. We were afraid of failure. You’ll never know if you don’t try it. To all women out there, I would say if you have a gift, don’t think about the what-ifs. Just go ahead, follow your dreams, and most likely it will happen. Make sure you have the right sources to talk to, plan ahead, research and go for it. Never let fear be an option, and don’t let fear decide your decision, because then you’ll never really know.

Since “Sister, Sister,” you and Tia have had your own projects. Was it difficult to branch out and start solo careers, and does it ever get competitive between you two?

It was difficult, yes, at first. People did see us as a unit, so whenever they saw me, they thought of my sister, but we never gave up. We have friendly sibling competition. It’s not to the point of “I’m going to try to bring her down.” We weren’t raised that way. We were taught that what’s for you, you’ll get, and vice versa. However, we are human, and it’s like Oh, well if she is working, I want to be working, but through life and experience, when we focused on ourselves and we had confidence in ourselves and we stayed true to ourselves, we realized that the other one would eventually always get work. That’s what was so amazing.

You and your sister are role models to many young girls, and you were given the Image Award for the positive messages that you send. How did you grow up in the spotlight and avoid suffering the same troubled fate as other teen actors?

It comes down to your upbringing. We’re Army brats, and any person raised in the military is raised with discipline. We put God first. You know what you’ve been given is a blessing, and in return you give back. My mom and dad could care less what we do, but [they care about] who we are as people. That’s their number one thing. Yes, we can have movies lined up, but are we striving to be the best people that we can possibly be? Are we kind? Are we nice to people? Do we know where our blessings come from? Also, we don’t have “yes friends.” We have friends that will tell us in a heartbeat, “You’re acting like an idiot. You’re acting ugly.” We have we what we call “no friends.” They’re not afraid to say, “No, you shouldn’t be dating that person,” or “You shouldn’t be doing that.”

You were the maid of honor in Tia’s wedding in 2008. What was going through your mind when you saw your sister walking down the aisle?

She just looked so beautiful and happy. I was just proud of her.

It can be difficult for twins to date and find partners who understand the special twin bond. Was it challenging for you and Tia to meet guys who could respect and understand your relationship with each other?

Oh my gosh, yeah. It was difficult because a lot of the time either the guy wants all of your attention or they are somewhat insecure. My sister and I have an amazing bond that no one could ever have. We have a bond that her and her husband don’t have, my mom and her don’t have. It’s a special built-in bond that we have. With that are disadvantages. We love each other so much that sometimes we are too involved in each other’s lives. Cory [Tia’s husband] is very, very understanding about that, and that’s what made it easier during the transition when she got married. However, some guys just didn’t get it. My boyfriend now, he is fine with that, too.

How would you describe Tia in one word?

Driven.

Can your fans expect to see more movies or TV shows with both of you acting together?

Yes, definitely more. We love working together, and the coolest thing is that our fans love seeing us together. As long as our fans love seeing us together, we’ll keep working together.
