"A Girl Like Me" is the true story of Gwen Araujo, born Eddie, who begins to dress and act as a girl as a teenager. Defying the family's traditional Latino heritage, this teen insists on wearing makeup, growing long hair and eventually adopting the name GThe true story of Sylvia Guerrero (Mercedes Ruehl), a mother raising her young son Eddie Araujo (JD Pardo), who as he grew into his teen years, began to dress and act as a girl. Despite Sylvia's protests and confusion, Eddie insisted on wearing make-up to school, growing his hair out and living more and more as a teen girl. Eventually at the age of 17, Eddie took the name Gwen after his idol Gwen Stefani and Gwen's family grew to accept her as she was, but remained fearful of how others might react. When Gwen's transgender status was discovered by four young males at a local party they savagely beat Gwen and murdered her. The shocking and senseless murder of Gwen Araujo caused an unprecedented community reaction. Gwen's entire high school attended her memorial service and when they heard of the tragedy, the Hell's Angels Biker Club offered protection for the mourners and family from any trouble. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Gwen's mother, Sylvia, the four young men who murdered Gwen are ultimately brought to justice. Based on a true story.
