No Funny Business: Do's and Don'ts at the Company Party
There's always one person at the office holiday party who makes a wrong turn under the mistletoe that they can't live down for the rest of the new year. Here's our advice for steering clear of those mishaps and rejoicing gracefully.
Do dress like you are going to meet clients.
Don't wear your slinky New Year's dress.
"Office party" is not a euphemism for dressing unprofessionally, emphasizes Cynthia Shapiro, a career advisor and author of "Corporate Confidential" (www.cynthiashapiro.com). "Inappropriate outfits erode your image as a trustworthy and diligent employee," she says. Still wondering what the big deal is? Shapiro cautions anyone with such a mind-set to remember that companies place a high premium on consistency. "They don't want to see that the ‘real you' is someone who doesn't dress tastefully when given a little leeway with the dress code." If you want to wear something festive, try adding a little spark to a neutral outfit with jewel tones — ruby red, jade green, cobalt blue — which are especially trendy this season. (A not-too-perfect updo looks cute too!)
