Thrifty and Glamorous
Got name brand taste but a no-frills budget? Here’s how you can treat yourself without going broke.

The luxury buy: Dermatologist treatments like microdermabrasion and peels
The shop-smart plan: When it comes to getting great skin, it’s worth splurging on great treatments like microdermabrasion or a medical grade facial, says Rachel Weingarten, a Brooklyn-based beauty-trend expert. “It can seem pricey to drop several hundred dollars on something that guarantees only temporary results, but the results are really startling — and affordable if you factor in that you only need one or two procedures each year,” she says.
To offset the expense, shop for skin products you use daily at the drugstore. Weingarten likes Olay’s Regenerist line for the face, and Curel and Aveeno products for the body. Cut costs even further by skipping toner — it’s an unnecessary step, Weingarten says. And you don't have to buy a pricey sunscreen. Just make sure it offers broad spectrum protection, blocking both UVA and UVB rays. A good drugstore option: Neutrogena. And use it regularly!
The luxury buy: Organic groceries
The shop-smart plan: Advocates of organic eating say it’s an investment in your health that’s worth any added cost. But if your bank balance can’t cover it, just be more selective. Stock up on organic dairy products, meat and produce rather than “natural” processed goods, says Anna Lappé, coauthor of “Grub: Ideas for an Urban Organic Kitchen.” “Buy ingredients, not the final product,” she says. (Think organic potatoes, not organic potato chips.)
In the produce aisle, choose organic where it counts the most: peaches, apples, sweet bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, pears, imported grapes, spinach, lettuce and potatoes. (The Environmental Working Group’s “Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce” identifies these as the “dirty dozen.”) Go ahead and buy conventional onions, avocados, frozen sweet corn, pineapples and mangoes — they top the guide’s “consistently clean” list. And Lappé suggests another way to boost your organic budget: Drink tap water instead of buying the bottled stuff. It’s good for your pocketbook and the planet!
The luxury buy: Designer jeans and handbags
The shop-smart plan: Regardless of your opinion on the current skinny-jean craze, a great pair of jeans is a wardrobe must-have — and a splurge-worthy item, according to New York City–based fashion consultant Amy Salinger. Her reasoning: No one will notice if you wear the same pair repeatedly, so you’ll get your money’s worth. Salinger feels that designer denim brands (she likes 7 for All Mankind, Paige Premium Denim, Ernest Sewn and Nobody) are made better, and keep their shape longer, than bargain brands. Her tips on how to save: Flowy boho tops to go over those pricey jeans, and costume jewelry.
Another investment item: Your handbag. While it might hurt to spend several hundred dollars on something you sling over your shoulder and toss on the ground, a beautiful, well-made bag puts the finishing touch on your outfit and will carry you through several seasons. Choose a neutral color like black, brown, tan, white or gold. “If you break it down and figure out how much you’re spending per day, it’s miniscule,” says Salinger.
