You won't believe how easy it is to create a beautiful room by painting just one wall and adding a few details.

In order to change our guest bedroom without having to completely redo it, we decided to paint the one wall behind the bed in a cyan tone and then add my classic blue-and-white bedroom collection, Sommerset Gardens.

The blue and white of the bedding and slipcovered chair is reflected in the blue-and-white china collection that's been securely hung over the bed with adhesive plate-hanger discs. It's a very interesting way to display a collection, and the plates' colors and patterns tie the whole room together. Use any kind of blue-and-white plates you can find. It seems that people have had blue-and-white china since the beginning of time, so it's one of those fun items that are easy to collect in garage sales or antique stores - there's always the odd plate or shape, and you can often come across something interesting. They don't have to be expensive.

I specifically chose the blue colors in this bedding to relate to the world of denim that we all love and constantly live in. It makes everything seem fresh and casual. One of my favorite pieces in this room is the padded headboard, which has been transformed with a navy blue slipcover. Not only is it versatile but the slipcover's incredibly functional - just toss it into the wash when it needs cleaning.

There's usually a water carafe and glass beside the bed. Newly picked lilac hydrangeas complement the bedding. However, much as I love fresh flowers, there are also beautiful silk flowers available these days and I defy anyone to tell the difference at first glance. Actually it's a very good idea to have silk flowers in the guest room most of the time and then replace them with fresh blooms when visitors arrive.
