Spice things up. The bedroom is a great place to use those warm, sensual colors you love but often shy away from. Add drama with rich red, create an elegant setting with regal purple or opt for fantasy with a deep blue hue painted on the ceiling (don't forget a smattering of white- or glow-paint stars). All it takes is a can of paint and a little nerve to create an intimate space you'll dream of all day long.

Create four-poster elegance. Pick up a few yards of scrim or other gauzy fabric and create your own canopy. Screw an eye hook into the ceiling above each corner of the bed. Draw fabric through one set of eye hooks, draping fabric as you go and making sure an even amount of fabric pools to the floor from each hook. Repeat threading process on the other side of the bed.

Get cozy. Create a bed-and-breakfast feel by making the bed with extra sham pillows, throw pillows and even a soft throw blanket to cuddle up with on a cool afternoon. A quilt folded up at the foot of the bed promises a cozy night, and a soft rug placed on the floor keeps toes happy and warm come morning.

Set the mood. Put inexpensive can lights from the home improvement store in each corner of the room to add drama and flair. Make sure there are reading lights available if you read in bed, and install a dimmer switch on any overhead lighting. Also, don't overlook the value of candlelight in the bedroom. Candle sconces can be mounted on the walls, or groupings of candles can be set on night tables. Remember to never leave candles unattended, or opt for flameless (battery-operated) tea lights and taper candles.

Add a dash of romance. Set out potpourri or scented oils, or try spritzing your linens with your favorite scent before you make the bed. Consider using subtle scents such as patchouli, sandalwood or lavender. Scented sachets can be tucked into pillowcases, and some scents are even said to help promote restful sleep!
