Just Say No — to Dieting
Icelanders celebrated their third annual "International No Diet Day” (INDD) last Tuesday. While we imagined tossing rice cakes into a volcano as part of the festivities, it's actually a global campaign that promotes awareness of dieting dangers, eating disorders and weight discrimination. “The urge to diet has lasted for more than 100 years, but still it has obviously not prevented obesity. It is even possible that the diet propaganda has added to the obesity problem,: says INDD's organizer, Sigrún Daníelsdóttir. Touché: Most people who get skinny on a diet gain back the weight — and then some. Why don’t diets work? Is it because people have unrealistic expectations? Or is it because people lack nutrition knowledge to keep themselves healthy?
