Nothing in life is so splendid as a series of romance novels. No; really. What could be better than knowing that your favorite author's hit upon a style and bunch of characters you love - and knowing you can get more of both on a fairly regular basis?
True, you can't always count on authors to consistently show you the love with each book they offer in a series. Very occasionally, series books don't remain fresh, and end up like literary "very special episodes" in which groups of characters from past novels traipse across the page like cardboard cutouts of their former lusty selves.
Lately, another type of series has become popular with romance readers, one in which the development of one couple's love story — and the sensual tension — is strung out over several novels. We get to enjoy not only that couple's blossoming relationship, but their struggles and triumphs as they move through a plot that holds equal importance with the love story.
One such series you should not miss is the vibrant, engaging, and exceedingly addictive Tairen Soul series from C.L. Wilson.
In the newest Wilson novel, we meet our heroine, Elysetta Baristani, who lives in a world where mortals coexist with immortal Fey and evil Mages. Ellie's been fated to become the "truemate" of Rain Tairen Soul. He's the King of the Fading Lands, and the last valiant Fey warrior able to change into a tairen, a magical winged, panther-like animal.
Seemingly mortal, Elysetta has powerful magic within her, but she fears it; most of those close to her mistrust, dislike, or don't have it. Yet she must learn to control and master her powerful magic. Because dark forces are rising up to threaten the existence of the Fey and mortals; those wicked beings want Ellie dead before she can execute the role she's destined to play when the big bad stuff goes down.
"Lady of Light and Shadows" is, to say the least, stunning. Wilson doesn't write a simple flight of fancy — a story rich in mythology, but, at its heart, basically about good versus evil. "Lady of Light and Shadows" — and the series — is so impressive and engaging because Wilson develops forces within the plot that compel characters to make choices — between triumph and failure, loyalty and betrayal, virtue and corruption.
Yet, "Lady of Light and Shadows" is a love story. So one is treated to tasteful and emotional sensuality, ramped up and sweetened by the element of magic Wilson wraps around her love scenes. Still, underlying the journey and struggle toward "happily ever after," Wilson makes a bold move by offering true heartache as a balance to the joy of Elysetta's and Rain's romance — shadow to the light, if you will.
"Lady of Light and Shadows," and the first Tairen Soul novel, "Lord of the Fading Lands," are breathtaking. Wilson knocks your socks off with her "world building" — creating "believable" fantasy that smoothly connects all parts of the story, and lasts from book to book. Plus, it's just wicked excellent fun to read sword-and-sorcerer fantasy that lets heroes be "manly men" in all the ways romance fans appreciate.
