Laura Bush, the wife of President George W. Bush, and their daughter Jenna Bush have signed a deal with HarperCollins Publishers to write a children’s book.
The book – which is currently untitled and will have a spring 2008 release – is set in a school and is about a boy who likes to do everything but read. With the help of a teacher, he learns about the joys of reading.
Laura, 60, is a former school teacher, and 25-year-old Jenna also has experience as a teacher. The mother and daughter are both alumni of the University of Texas at Austin. Jenna graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English in 2004, and first lady Laura holds a master’s degree in library science from the university. Laura earned her bachelor’s degree from Southern Methodist University. Laura and George W. Bush have another child, Barbara, who is Jenna’s fraternal twin sister.
In a statement, Laura commented, “I am delighted to have the opportunity to partner with one of my favorite teachers, my daughter Jenna, to write a children’s book and to have it illustrated by the wonderfully talented artist, Denise Brunkus.”
Jenna added, “My mom has been my lifelong inspiration, sharing her love of reading books with Barbara and me since we were little girls. I’ve taken that passion into the classroom. I hope this book will help kids realize the importance and fun that reading can add to their daily lives.”
The children’s book will not be Jenna’s first as an author. Jenna’s first book, “Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope,” is set for publication by HarperCollins on September 28, 2007. “Ana’s Story” is novel based on a true story about a young woman infected at birth with the HIV virus.
