The Queen has a way of turning anything she touches into gold and warming our hearts in the process. And that goes for the older blues, soul and jazz tunes, (some familiar and some forgotten) which she covers in her latest offering, “Trav’lin’ Light.” While the album does sound a bit like the soundtrack to a movie musical — it even features a track from her movie “Hairspray” — the songbird definitely proves her vocal chops, as always. The songs (originally performed by Etta James, Nina Simone, Peggy Lee, Roberta Flack and many more) vary from sultry and flirty to powerful and moving. She even gets a little assistance from talented artists Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and Stevie Wonder. This is a fun CD to add to your collection. The tracks you must listen to are “Don’t Cry Baby,” “I’m Gonna Live Till I Die” and “How Long.”
