Why do Americans sign up for the armed forces?
The question bubbled up recently in a controversy involving the President’s alleged remarks to the widow of fallen sergeant La David Johnson.
While accounts of the words spoken on that condolence call differ, the phrase “he knew what he signed up for” took on a life of its own.
Given the risks, why do so many U.S. men and women — an estimated 200,000 troops a year — join the military?
