MONTHLY OVERVIEW
New Year, new you! 2013 begins with the Sun making its annual visit to Capricorn. Wherever you need to turn a fresh page—with your family, your work, your relationship—you have helpful winds at your back. But the biggest day arrives on January 11, when a Capricorn new moon joins with the Sun, expressive Mercury, magnetic Venus and transformational Pluto, all in your hardworking sign. This day is truly your personal new year—setting off a six-month cycle of growth around your goals and identity. If you’ve felt stagnant or stuck in a holding pattern, prepare for some serious momentum. The way you look (Venus) and the way you think (Mercury) could both be radically revamped by this new moon.
Your career could be especially busy all month, with energizer Mars in Aquarius, your second house of work and money. Mars kicks off the year with a star-powered economic stimulus package, revving you up to make more money, more money and, yes, more money. Since Mars can add tension, your job could prove stressful, perhaps because you’re working extra hard for that raise or to please a particular client. (Next time you’re on a business trip and the corporate bigwig demands you meet her for a 5:30 am breakfast, say no…especially since that same grand dame kept you at the hotel bar ‘til the wee hours of the morning.) The tension will lessen when the energizing Sun and clever Mercury enter Aquarius on January 19. The rest of the month could be especially prosperous and productive.
On January 26, a full moon in Leo, your eighth house of intimacy, could bring an emotional day. If you’ve been stuffing your feelings down, they might all come out in a somewhat dramatic fashion. An emotional meltdown could be unavoidable, especially since the depth of your feelings could surprise even you. The eighth house also rules shared resources and long-term finances. With a full moon here, you might also get word about an exciting joint venture opportunity, or a chance to make things official in a business or romantic relationship. Since full moons bring things into the open, you may be compelled to share a secret or bare your soul at this date.
Caution: The full moon sits in a challenging “square” angle to Saturn in Scorpio, your eleventh house of groups and friends. Beware of having no filter as your volcano-like eruption of emotion comes out—or of spewing the hot lava of your tantrum on an unsuspecting person. Sure, your BFF knows that your wild mood swing is just a passing phase (and not cause for breaking out the straitjacket…again), but your new acquaintance from the knitting club might not. And since she’s friends with Jen who’s friends with Kate who is in charge of hiring at the company of your dreams, this could spell “unfortunate stigma that follows you everywhere.” Capisce? So whether or not there’s a connection chain you can trace, you should definitely be mindful: not everyone should be used as a confidante.
LOVE & ROMANCE
“What is it about you?” your friends will start asking after January 8, when magnetic Venus enters Capricorn. You’ll just shrug, of course, and act like you have no idea. (But if someone wants to take your photo—and looking as hot as you do, this could happen—skip saying “Cheese,” and instead say, “Venus!”…because that’s the culprit of this inner glow.) If you’ve been squinting in the mirror and counting crows’ feet as of late, you now focus on your own bright eyes. Fine, you’d never say anything quite that cheesy or immodest. However, your self-image will deservedly improve, and it won’t hurt that you’re an effortless head-turner under this cosmic influence. Yep. All you have to do is breathe. But if you do want to amp up this mojo, perhaps you’ll adopt an attention-grabbing hairdo or even new makeup style. Then dress up a little, flirt and enjoy the compliments. If you weathered a heartbreak or romantic turbulence in 2012, prepare to move on. Venus in Capricorn is here to give you a fresh perspective on love!
On January 11, the Capricorn new moon brings you some beautiful clarity on what you truly want in life and love. Since this moon shares the Capricorn stage with love planet Venus, thoughtful Mercury and pensive Pluto, prepare to go deep. Perhaps you thought you knew what kind of closeness you desire (breakfast in bed on weekends, theater tickets once a month), only to realize that the intimacy you desire is a lot more soul-baring (sharing your innermost feelings, the parts you hardly ever let anyone see…even yourself). Single Capricorns might crave partnership and understand just what they need to create it. For a primer, we suggest Katherine Woodward Thomas’ “Calling in the One: Seven Weeks To Attract the Love of Your Life.”
Capricorn, under this new moon, you’re called to action, to start fresh and sans baggage—which your nostalgic and past-oriented sign is famous for dragging along. Whatever transpires on this day will set off a six-month cycle of self-discovery and personal improvement. Your actions now ultimately increase your chances of creating the relationship you want, so be willing to release those outworn beliefs and habits that are blocking your happiness. This new moon helps you put your own needs at the center of your affairs in the coming six months, a deceptively simple act that will certainly make you more attractive to anyone! You may even have to come up with a let-‘em-down-gently line for the mailman, the barista, maybe even the office intern.
On January 26, a full moon in Leo shines a light on your intense eighth house of intimacy and privacy, possibly bringing fulfilling news of an engagement, cohabitation or pregnancy. Whether you have tears in your eyes from the ultrasound or just a deep hum in your soul from having reached this deeper level of commitment, this day is a moment of reckoning, a turning of a page. Perhaps your relationship has been hanging by a thread or threatened by looming trust issues. (You want to let go of that mental image of the Facebook pic of the ample-bosomed siren your love once hooked up with, you really do…but can you? And why are they Facebook friends anyway?) If your memory is elephantine and you’re not willing to let go, well, there could be some issues to clear. A tenuous connection may not survive this full moon—at least, not without dealing with any looming, unresolved trust issues.
Since this full moon forms a tense “square” angle to stern Saturn in Scorpio, your eleventh house of friendships, your pals could try to weigh in on your romantic choices—unsolicited or with heavy-handed judgment. Perhaps they don’t see the affection you have and think it’s as easy as turning a switch. Be mindful of whom you confide in, especially since there could be some drama. Maybe a friend is tired of listening to your romantic sagas and decides to give you an earful. Before you get haughty (and hurt), take a deep breath and remember that perhaps their discomfort is mirroring some of your own. If you’ve been using friends as your dial-a-shrink, now is a good day to pick up that phone and make an appointment with a real therapist.
MONEY & CAREER
Tag—you’re it, Capricorn. As the Sun blazes through your sign until January 19, your personal and professional goals take top billing. Since Caps are known to whisper cocktail confessions about which heavy-hitter you’ve got your sights set on meeting, this is not exactly news. However, with a slew of planets in your sign this month, you have added mojo (from Venus), a little more clarity (via Mercury) and some mega transformative energy (from Pluto) to aid you in this process. You’re not just doing the old schmooze-and-booze at those industry cocktail events. You’re reinventing yourself, so that all your interactions, whether at parties or a job interview, are more genuinely reflective of your personal power.
The calendar has officially turned, but your personal new year is on January 11, when the Capricorn new moon ushers a new six-month cycle of personal development and success. Intentions you set now will take strong root by this summer. With intelligent Mercury and mystical Pluto also in Capricorn—alongside magnetic Venus—your powers of manifestation are at an all-time high. The Law of Attraction is always on your side, so tap into it.
To take maximum advantage of this new moon, don’t just think of how much money you want to make or the new stuff you’ll stockpile. Go deeper: What difference would you like to cause in the world? If you had amassed all the power, resources and influences you desire…what would you change? In this post-2012 era, we’re all being called to “be the change we want to see in the world.” Maybe you’re a PR specialist who wants to shift your focus to do more humanitarian work, so you take on a pro bono client. Or perhaps you’re a top-level administrator who wants to drop the mantle of executive and get your hands dirty on the front lines, shifting your company away from that soul-numbing hierarchy model. Perhaps you’re sick of reading about yet another shooting, war or disaster that leaves you feeling helpless. Check out Sister Giant (www.sistergiant.com), an organization with a new spiritual or “enlightened” approach to politics. The group has monthly calls with incredible thought leaders, designed to shift us from feeling upset and immobilized at yet another round of awful “breaking news.”
Revving up your earning capacity all month, energizer Mars moves through Aquarius, your second house of work and money. Though it’s exciting to have the motivation of go-getter Mars pushing you forward in your daily life, you might also get a little stressed out, since you’re definitely picking up the pace. As some projects come to fast conclusions (and others have stratospheric launches), you might clash with a coworker who sees things a little differently than you (and after the late nights you’ve been logging, your tolerance is thin).
If things get tense, just remember that this too shall pass. No need to dig in your heels over whether or not the background of the PowerPoint is sky blue or mint green. Instead, get your mind on that much-deserved vacation you should have in the works. Your work life stabilizes after January 19, when the Sun and Mercury enter Aquarius, too. Now the ruffled feathers are soothed over with spot-on communication and lighthearted exchanges. You’re feeling a lot more generous…not to mention detached.
On January 26, a full moon shines in Leo, your eighth house of windfalls and joint venture opportunities, placing a spotlight on long-term finances. If a big-ticket expense pops up, such as a tax bill or home repair, be thankful you have the funds to cover it. Instead of stressing, borrow this mantra from Marianne Williamson’s new book, The Divine Law of Compensation. Instead of freaking out, tell yourself, “I can absorb the loss.”
You may also decide to invest in real estate or if you’re already a homeowner, to plan improvements that increase your property value. If you’ve been crossing your fingers that your place sells after a long stint on the market, you might end up hearing word of a buyer or even closing around this date. If you’ve been slogging your way up that steep hill, your eyes could open to the landscape of passive income opportunities. Yes, you can make money while you sleep, Capricorn…as much as you like to pay your dues. One Capricorn we know questioned the promotion she got on her second day of work, saying, “I don’t feel like I earned it” when in fact, this boost was commensurate with her exceptional talents. Since that could be a pitfall with you, Capricorn, we say: Don’t look any gift horses (or stock options) in the mouth. Graciously accept what the universe is bestowing upon you and your bank account.
A word of caution: With this dramatic full moon squaring sober Saturn in your eleventh house of networking, you could sway between emotional extremes. Your status-conscious sign may want to “keep up with the Joneses” or get swept up in the pressure of having a certain image, and so maybe you get a lesson in keepin’ it real around this date. Your new joint venture is not dependent upon whether or not you’ve met every A-list player in your industry. It’s dependent on your confidence in your own authority. Yes, you can play (and dress) the part, but don’t forget to love the part. If you stress yourself silly because you can’t buy that uber-hip laptop case or status bag, well, then all you’ve done is wasted copious amounts of your precious time. A myopic focus on being in the good graces of your friends and associates and appearing like you have it all—especially if that comes at the expense of you being authentic—will only block you from prosperity. Start being open to support—and not just in a crisis, when you’ve reached rock bottom and are in a state of desperation. Don’t forget that people like to help: they want to make introductions, hook you up with their favorite broker or agent, and be part of your success. If they think you’ve got it covered, how can they keep the good vibes flowing your way?
HEALTH: MIND, BODY & SOUL
Does the sound of your alarm clock annoy you, Capricorn? Does that stack of unread New Yorker magazines only serve to make you feel bad about how behind you are on your literary influences? Do you wake up, stumble over your own shoes and think, I’ve got to change this? Well, with go-getter Mars transiting Aquarius, your second house of daily routines, you may be prompted to reduce the little stresses and tensions of your immediate environment. The minor irritations we experience on a quotidian basis can have a cumulative effect. All month, you’ll find ways to eliminate those annoying things you’ve brushed aside. Uncork that bottle of lavender oil, and let the de-stressing begin.
With the concentration of planets—Sun, Mercury, Venus and Pluto—in Capricorn, your focus is naturally on yourself. Before you let an iota of guilt slip in (we know, we know, what will your coworkers do without your steady shoulder?) consider this: you cannot always be the rock for other people, especially if you don’t know how to be the rock for yourself. Sure, it might be uncomfortable at first. But it’s also a five-star opportunity to take full-fledged responsibility for who you are in the world and finally release those small (and not so small) resentments, like a bunch of helium balloons. Feel lighter? One person we know actually DID buy a bunch of balloons, Sharpie-d her grievances on them, and set them free. (Great idea, though pity the person who found a bunch of deflated rubber scribbled on with “my mom never compliments me” and “I hate my car” wherever they landed.)
On January 30, expansive Jupiter moves direct (forward) in Gemini, your sixth house of health. Whew! These have been a long few months for your overall wellness and energy levels. (The planet of expansion turned retrograde, or backward, in early November). Now, you can start your 2013 health kick and get back on track with an inspiring fitness or eating plan. Jump-start your efforts early with the 21 Day Mind/Body Cleanse by Dr. Frank Lippman and psychotherapist Terri Cole, which starts January 14: http://terricole.com/dr-frank-lipman-terri-cole-21-day-cleanse. (Enter the code “MBCOT1” for a special discount.) If you’ve been immersed in a macrobiotic revolution (but not seeing any payoff), you will now begin to see great results. Embrace theses positive changes around your health, and, hey, if you’re so inspired, you might just spend the month jotting all that you’ve experienced and learned. The makings of an inspirational blog or book, perhaps? The sixth house rules pets, and with Jupiter here until June 25, you may want to adopt a furry critter, or spend more time with the one you have. Pets are shown to lower blood pressure and increase our happiness. Who couldn’t use a little more of that?
