Tension, Struggle & the Astrological “Square”
In astrology, much of the interpretation relies on the angles (or aspects) that any two planets form to one another. These aspects all carry specific energy patterns — some easy, others challenging. Astrologers can forecast whether smooth sailing or choppy waters are ahead, based on planetary aspects. For example, if the emotional Moon is in a harmonious trine (120-degree angle) aspect to romantic Venus, love will flow easily. But if, say, structured and disciplined Saturn is opposite (180 degrees) rebel Uranus or impatient Mars, people are uncomfortably pulled between a desire to apply themselves to a goal and a counter-desire to break free and say, “Screw it!”
For the past month, we’ve been experiencing an aspect called the “square,” between planets, an aspect that means they’re a tense 90-degree angle apart. There may be a prevailing sense of frustration, of stopping and starting, or of people just not getting on the same page or staying on it for long. If you’ve been feeling this way, you’ll need to tough it out for another month. The “silver lining” of squares is that they teach us compromise. Because two (or more) contrasting forces must be balanced, it takes a lot of negotiation to find that happy medium. This is about as easy as getting all the Real Housewives not to fight at a Bravo reunion — but somewhere, an astrological Andy Cohen may come along to mediate.
Here are some of the squares in the air:
1. Intense Pluto in Capricorn square stern Saturn in Libra
People’s desire for status and achievement may impede their sense of justice and fair play. Also, being overly goal-oriented (or pushing an agenda) interferes with the natural, slow-and-steady progress of a relationship. People are torn between tending to their careers and their relationships, and have a hard time balancing both.
2. Pluto in Capricorn square Jupiter, Mercury, Sun and Mars in Aries
What do you want … and what do your parents, your boss, society and other outside forces expect of you? You’re torn between being living in the moment and the pressures to “make it” or keep your social standing. You may fear that being outspoken, adventurous and true to yourself will cost you respect, your job or someone’s approval. Bosses, government institutions and other authority figures seem to be suppressing your individuality or freedom.
3. Saturn in Libra square Jupiter, Mercury, Sun and Mars in Aries
Your obligations to other people can’t be avoided, but they’re cramping your freedom. You feel constrained by a need to prove your seriousness, especially in a partnership. You may be afraid that speaking up will negatively affect a relationship, yet you feel resentful when you bite your tongue.
Oh, brother! Usually, we get one or two of these at a time, but not so many. So just hang in there, negotiate, and stay true to yourself while also fulfilling your responsibility. This is not the time to beat yourself up. In this astrological climate, you will always feel like you’re behind deadline, doing a million things yet accomplishing nothing. Be nice to yourself and acknowledge whatever you do achieve. Remember, you’re only human!
