We’ve all heard the expression “once in a blue moon” used to describe a rare event. In astrology, a blue moon has its own definition. There are 13 full moons in most calendar years.  Since there are 12 months — and 12 zodiac signs that the moon circulates through — this 13th moon is referred to as the blue moon.

So how does it work? For two months in a row, the full moon will blossom in the same zodiac sign (generally, it moves from one sign to the next each month). The effect? A double dose of results that manifest over the course of two months.

This year’s blue moon takes place in Aries, the energetic self-starter of the zodiac. There was a full moon in Aries on September 23. The second full moon in Aries will take place on Friday, October 22.

The Aries blue moon will reward people who take risks and courageously initiate action. Solo projects and independent ventures are blessed with extra luck, especially those that got under way near the corresponding new moon in Aries on April 14, 2010.  Competitions may get fierce — and exciting — this week. Perfect timing for part one of the “Project Runway” finale!

Aries is also the warrior of the zodiac. If unresolved tension is still brewing from the September 23 full moon, look out! We could see some knock-down, drag-out fights this week. Fiery Aries energy is known for being rash, impulsive and impatient. Maybe it’s NOT the best night to go on that pub crawl, or hit a Halloween pre-party where our nemesis might show up. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  Good thing that “Real Housewives of D.C.” reunion show was pre-taped.
