Are You a Match? Cosmic Compatibility Secrets
As astrologers, one of the first things our readers and clients ask about is love. “Are we compatible?” they want to know about their mates or latest prospects. Well, we believe that any two signs can make a relationship work. Some matches are smoother than others, but that doesn’t always make them better. We can grow through challenges or by stretching out of our comfort zones. Easy doesn’t always mean good — or more romantic. It’s all about understanding the dynamics between yourself and another person, no matter what their sign is.
Here are a few of the things we look at when analyzing compatibility:
The complete astrological charts of both people:
When you’re born, all the planets are in different signs, at varying degrees and angles to each other. Your chart is a portrait of that, based on the time, date and place of your birth. The collective energies of all these planets and signs make up your complete personality. (In fact, your zodiac sign is really just your Sun sign – where the Sun was when you were born.) We say a birth chart is like a user’s manual to yourself. If you’ve never done your chart, cast one for free at our website:
Moon & Venus signs:
The Moon rules your emotions, and Venus rules what attracts you. While your Sun signs may be rather different (like Aquarius and Virgo, or Sagittarius and Taurus), you may have harmonious Moon or Venus signs.
The Moon is particularly powerful as a compatibility indicator, because it drives your deepest needs and desires. A person who shares your Moon sign can feel like a soul mate, no matter what his/her Sun sign. Find your Moon sign with our Moon Sign Calculator.
Fire, Earth, Air and Water The zodiac’s 12 signs are divided into four elements.
Fire Signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Fire is dynamic, aggressive, passionate.
Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Earth is stable, loyal, grounding.
Air Signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Air is excitable, in constant motion, curious.
Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Water is sensitive, deep, mysterious.
Popular astrology suggests that Fire and Air go better together, and Earth and Water match well. That’s because Fire and Air are masculine/yang — more outwardly focused or extroverted — while Water and Earth are feminine/yin and more slow or sensitive. There’s some truth there, but again, one needs to look at the whole chart.
Sometimes, a person can have a lot of one element in the chart. For example, we are fiery Sagittarius Suns, but we have Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars in watery Scorpio. We needed partners whose chart elements would balance our heavy Water emphasis. Turns out both of our husbands have their Moon in Taurus, which is the opposite sign of Scorpio. Taurus is an Earth sign, which adds a grounding, down-to-earth element to our mystical water.
Although this isn’t an exact science, you can look at your chart and another person’s and evaluate them just like that. Count how many Fire, Earth, Air and Water signs are in your complete charts (remember, you can do unlimited charts for free), and don’t be surprised if your compatibility — or lack thereof — is written in the stars.
Should you find that your charts are rather different, that doesn’t mean it’s bad. It just means you need to work harder to understand each other sometimes; to learn each other’s “love language” (or sign language), as it were. At the end of the day, if you’re in love and committed, stay that way. Astrology is a great tool for keeping the communication flowing smoothly.
