Whatever could Gretchen have meant by saying, "I'm glad the judges game me a second chance, like they gave all of you." What hairpin twists could her ego-mind have taken to make her think she was on equal footing with the top three who were the definite winners of the last and determining challenge? Clearly, she was chosen (by a hair) as the ALTERNATE. Meanwhile, the designer she loves to bash, the "idiot savant," Michael C. walked away with the top position. She's just lucky that they have taken to giving a fourth person a chance to make a collection. In the old days, she would have just been out. How could Michael C., Andy, and Mondo have been given a "second chance" when they were the winners? There's no equivocating here, except in Gretchen's world. I am so excited that with all the raining down criticism on Michael C. by most of the other designers, his innate ability and natural talent was not dampened!! Yea Michael C. Yea Mondo. Yea Andy. But not good-bye April. In this last episode, she seemed more real and could even cry. I think this is a good sign that she is developing the scope and vulnerability to be a really great designer.
